Topic to discuss....
After hearing on the news about that little girl that survived 3 days after the plane crash, it has me wondering...
Do you think people survive because their mind wants to or just because their body isn't ready to shut down? Do you think we can control our own mortality?? Discuss...

I think will has a tremendous amount to do with survival in the best and worst conditions. I have seen people with money, access to health care and opportunities completely fall apart because they have no will.

No, I personally don't think we can control our own mortality. I think it just happens when it happens...boy that sounds really pessimistic, and I'm not really like that normally

I think the mind and body battle. Both are so strong. Look at people with cancer who fight and fight but the body gives out. I think the mind was stronger and made the body hold out. But I also think the body is strong, too. Yeah, didn't really answer your question.

I think that people who survive in situations like the plane crash, or the family that got lost in the freezing cold, have a lot of mental strength. Some people who have the strength still might not survive, but without the strength, survivial may be impossible. I often worry about whether I would have the strength to tolerate a physically adverse situation.

Re: Topic to discuss....
I definitely think that your mind can override your body...case in point
my dad was in ICU with a nasty infection for 13 weeks, the doctor said he was going to die
there was very little hope at one point , then one day, he opened his eyes (we were waiting for this as a "Sign" for about 2 weeks), then he slowly got better and better and walked out of the ICU after 13 weeks. He is now doing great...he had 2 SMALL children at the time and I think honestly, he was not ready to go...too many things to "make right"

I agree with this!
I think no matter how strong your mind is sometimes your body can't go on. So I think you need both strong mind and willing body.

I think there is definitely a will to survive that can keep people going for longer. I believe there is also a point where people fighting for their lives can mentally give up (which is followed by death). In terms of survival...it's more along the lines of hold on for a cure, hold on for help to arrive, hold on until you can no longer.
But while hope is a powerful thing, ultimately, I don't think we control our own mortality.

I agree. I think your mental state can adjust your longevity, in either direction, but not halt death, or cause death.
Otherwise, there would be a lot more people alive today....
