Pet Insurance?
We are considering getting it for Riley...we Are aware that purebred's "typically" are prone to more illnesses and what not...and German shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia... so kinda just a just in case cushion.
So does anyone have it pet insurance? Is it a waste of money??
If you do have it, who do you have it thru and how much do you pay per month?
TIA

Re: Pet Insurance?
I honestly thought about it, but I was telling my mother that we were thinking of getting it and she said not to bother. She said that whenever she put in a claim, they would tell her it wasn't covered...apparently if an animal is prone to certain illnesses or problems, they don't cover it. And if there is anything pre-existing, they don't cover it. So we opted against it....I'm not sure it was the best decision. We just spent $2500 on our 4 year old cat. But, I'm not sure if they would have covered it had we had insurance...
I would definitely thoroughly read all the fine print of any insurance carrier you look at.

Re: Pet Insurance?
We have it, through VPI. This is the plan we have
It's about $24/ month for a huge list of covered ailments/injuries. I rationalize the cost by saying it was half the money I used to spend on cigarettes, when I smoked.
It is true that if a specific breed is prone to a disease/ailment or has a pre-exisiting condition they may not cover it.
My main concern was the accidental stuff. God forbid a million times, but if she gets injured or swallows/eats something. It's really just piece of mind for me.
My insurance plan doesn't cover well visits or vaccinations, but the extra cost to cover that stuff didn't really pay in the long run. It was cheaper for us just to pay out right for those types of things.
Here is there website, so you can read up on their plans:

Re: Pet Insurance?
See, I just checked their website and they don't cover hip or elbow dysplasia in any dogs or cats.... Plus, they have a bunch of breed specific things they don't cover.

Re: Pet Insurance?
I do. Costs about 300 a year.
VPI pet insurance
I don't know if it worth it yet. So far no, but that is b/c my dog hasn't had anything major happen. You just never know.
I do get a partial reimbursement for her flea meds, yearly check up and vaccinations, etc. This year I got back about 120 (out of that 300).
