For those who have cats....
If you have cats and live in a house, or first floor apartment, how do you keep your cats from running out?
I just bought a house recently and my biggest fear is that my cats are going to get out of the house. I seriously worry about them all the time.
We use to live on the top floor of a 3 family house so we didn't have to worry. Our last apartment had a vestibule so if they got into the hall we could catch them. My house now leads right to the front and our cats are really curious. Last week the youngest one got onto the stoop when I was taking packages in and my heart dropped.
How do I train them to stay away from the front door?

keep a water (spray) bottle near the door and everytime you go to the door and they follow or they try and go around it in a curious way or they try to run out, etc. SPRAY them right in the face - they will, after a while, associate getting spritzed with going for the door - we did this with our cats and it worked.

Re: For those who have cats....
To be honest we are just very careful and generally stick a leg through the door first to push her back, they have got out a couple of times, but they seem to get a bit scared and either just stand there or when it was raining just ran back in! It was easier in our last house as we had a storm door, but you will get used to it, if we have a lot of stuff to bring in we put them in a bedroom and shut the door. Good luck!

we live on a second floor apartment but my cat loves to lay on the floor and the bottom of the stairs. we are just very careful when we open the front door, we open it a crack to make sure he's not there, and if he is, we yell at him until he runs upstairs, then we come inside.
