Re: Electric Collar
I am not a fan. They are available but can be both physically and emotionally damaging.
Have you considered a trainer for your pet?

Re: Electric Collar
I don't have one, but a few people I know have gotten them through a training service and they work really well. They don't actually shock the dog, it's more like a tap, tap thing...just enough to get the dog's attention. I think if the dog doesn't get it at the lowest setting you can dial it up a bit. I recommend getting one through a training service (MuttManners or BarkBusters) as opposed to buying one in a store, just because you will learn how to use it correctly.

That's exactly right. We tried it on ourselves before we started with Mutt Manners, and it's barely noticable. Yet extremely effective. I would rather my dog be well trained this way than him to run into the street against my warning and get hit by a car - much much worse.

My neighbors have one for their golden retriever. They have tried it themselves and it works for their dog.
I have heard that it "changes" a dog though and that if they really WANT something that they will run right through the thing. (My neighbor's dog did this once, and then they upped the voltage so he wouldn't do it again...
).

Re: Electric Collar
Only under extreme circumstances should a shock collar be used. Based on what you state, I do not see why you would use one. To ensure your dog does not run into the street, ALWAYS have him/her secure on leash. If in the back yard, make sure it is fenced and always have it locked...and I mean with a lock. They can be dangerous if missed used, can cause bad behavior in the dog and many dogs can tolerate the pain and will do what they will anyway. As part of a rescue organization, I strong discourage the use of shock collars.

Re: Electric Collar
I was going to try one, but then when I went to Petco, they were all out. So I took it as a sign to try other behavior techniques. just using a can of pennies has changed my dogs behavior.

ITA...we got it when we used Mutt Manners and have used it with our two other dogs and ALL 3 of them are trained off leash which is great for us b/c we don't have a fence in our yard.

Re: Electric Collar
I hate this preachy stuff. You don't want to use an electric collar, don't. But do not tell me what I should/shouldn't do.
My trainers are highly successful and huge dog lovers - that's why they train dogs, to keep them safe.
The president of the Nassau County SPCA supports and praises the trainers we use.
Sorry, dogs are not on a leash at all times and don't have to be. The collar does NOT hurt (and if you have actually TRIED the ones they use you would know this), it simply gets their attention. After training, the collar is rarely even used.
I've had dogs my whole life - some better behaved and more easy to train than others. My previous Lab got hit by a car - and fortunately was OK. I just had a baby (well 6 months ago) and it was important to us to have a dog, specifically a Lab. I could not have him pulling me down the street 9 months pregnant, nor when I walk him with the baby now.
I can walk him and the baby in the park - on or off leash - and I know how he will behave.
ETA - It is NOT a shock collar. Also not the same as the collar used to keep your pet confined. I am speaking about an electric training collar.

My friend had one for her dog. She tried it on herself, said it didn't hurt. She had a pitbull.

they are not used to stop a dog from barking. they are used for training purposes.
I used muttmanners as well and was apprehensive about the collars. Frank the trainer put it against his own neck and said to zap him, and I did. Ive done it to myself. it doesnt hurt AT ALL, its more of an annoyance to get their attention. the same technology is used for those invisible fences.
not trying to be preachy, and of course they can be used in the wrong way, but when used the correct way they are a safe effective training tool.

when I used to help my neighbor clean houses, one of her customers used to to stop her daog from barking...everytime we were there the dog barked, and she would make the collar zap....that is pretty harsh if you ask me. so I guess she misused it, but I think there are MUCH better ways to train a dog than to use this collar....

Re: Electric Collar
If you live in NY State the law is that ALL dogs must be on leash when in public places. The only way a dog would get hit by a car is if he was off leash or ran out of an unlocked yard.

or you open the door and your dog runs outside, or he sees a squirrel and he is on a leash and breaks free....
just because you have a fence and a leash doesnt mean your dog is safe or trained. i never have my dog off a leash out of the backyard (although he is trained off leash) and yet he finds ways to get out!

regardless of how you feel about the collar - this is a really insensitive and judgemental comment. Sorry. But let's play nice here, ok? Obviously, very good owners can possibly have their dog get hit by a car. And by the way - many dogs have gotten out of LOCKED yards - they can be quite the escape artists if they want to be

Re: Electric Collar
I am reading over the posts to my comments. Yes it is true that there are accidents, however, that is not what I am referring to. Many dog owners have their dog off leash or unattended in yards. What I am saying is that most can be prevented. The average person does not see what are in shelters on a daily basis. Many dogs lost or injured and above all many dogs that are surrendered because owners failed to train them. Electric collars should be a last resort that is all I am saying.

So we can agree to disagree..... since I seem to think your "facts" don't explain the whole truth

thats abusive and not the way the collar is supposed to be used. but she would have probaby hit the dog if she didnt have it
and while some dogs may respond to other types of training, i found that my dog responded the best with a collar. Muttmanners has dogs there that start classes muzzled because they are SO agressive and in a few months they come to class with no muzzle , its truly fantastic.
one of the trainers is getting her PHd in animal psycology (or something like that!)

They have now set up a charity fund. Some of the clients make monetary donations for the training collars and the trainers donate their time for low-income families who have not been successful in training their pets and are about to get rid of them.
The most recent case was a woman with advanced cancer. Her dog was aggressive and her family not interested in taking the time to train him. He was locked in a garage all day long with no one to care for him except this woman who was very sick from chemo and was able to feed him and that's about it.
The family has used up all their savings and is in debt up to their ears.
Enter mutt manners. We (clients) made $$ donations to buy the collar. THe trainers are working with the dog in a boarding situation.
Now the family has a loving, well-behaved dog that they can all get along with. Their goal is to PROTECT and TRAIN dogs and their owners in a successful and pain-free manner and that is what they do.
I suggest anyone who is against this training attend one of their classes or at least watch one of the on-line videos before knocking it.
