question about therapists?

Ok i have never gone so i am actually just curious how this works. A friendo f mine goes to one regulary. She was telling me a story about her and another one of her friends havng a disagreement( i dont know the other girl) and so she is saying what happeend her friend said this, she said this, back and forth. Then she says so her friends says XYZ. i said so what did you repsond to that?
She said i didnt,( it was on email) i wanted to talk to my therapist first?

i let it go bc i didnt wnat to get into a whole discusiion but do therapists give you advice about situations? i always thought they kind of helped you come to a conclusionon of your own type of thing?
i dont mean to sound ignorant but i really dont know how it works. TIA

A therapist will give you tools and suggestions on how to handle situations and gives you a forum to discuss things going on in your life and your feelings. So your friend may have wanted some insight on how she may respond.

hmm..well I wouldn't go that far...but I get some good advice on how to handle situations but I wouldn't stop my life.

That's what my mom does and it drives me nuts (has to consult her therapist). They should teach YOU healthier ways of handling things. not so much tell you exactly what to do in specific situations.

My therapist gives me suggestions but all in all the choices are really up to you.
