I personalized our photo cards, but added a hand message as well to each card as well.

A note, I think it's pointless to just send a to - from card. It's says that the person is not worth the two seconds extra to write something personal.

Before my son was born I used to write a little something like "Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season but now we do photocards of DS.

I always make a point to write out the people's names. For some reason, it bothered me (when I was little) and we would get "Pat, Ken & the kids" or "The Smith Family"
Sometimes, if the person is really close and I have something extra to say I will write a little note.

We had personalized holiday cards made this year so everything was writen on them that we wanted. I just needed to address the envelopes.
