I feel the same way I am also paranoid. But the one thing that makes me feel better is that I have four cameras placed outside my home, so when I am in bed I watch tv and look at the cameras at the same time. I can also see them when I am using the computer. It is a great investment.

Everytime DH comes home late (like tonight) I obsess over the reality of a home invasion. I'm overly cautious, I know...and I read a lot of true crime novels, but I feel like it's bound to happen to us (we live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood....not that it can't happen anywhere, but I feel like we might be targets)...

We have an alarm system, but from the story I read earlier on here that doesn't seem to do much good. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about panic buttons (like they have at banks)...how much are they for homes?? I just feel very vulnerable with a baby here alone and we've had a lot of workers at our house recently (getting our basement finished) and I don't like the idea of random guys becoming familiar with our house and the layout.

Anyway, I feel that it's better to be paranoid about this stuff then to wait until after something happens. What can I get installed that will make me feel safer? I know that if they really want to get in, they will....but isn't there something out there that can give me peace of mind?

OMG I worry about the same thing! I am in the same situation. We just sold our house and are renting a house that is definitely a target...brand new, fancy entry, etc. I also have 2 acres and the backyard goes on for miles it seems and you can not see anything...

I also agree. If you are taking necessary precautions (and it sounds like you are), I wouldn't be living in fear all the time. You miss out on a lot of life when you are scared all the time. It could also be a sign of anxiety disorder, OCD, etc. (Not saying it always is, but if you are really constantly living in fear, letting the fear change how your normally live your life, or letting the fear affect your health, it might be worth talking to your doc...)

Have you thought about getting a guard dog or a big dog like a doberman or something. I know most people are scared to get one if they have babies/small children but I think that they can be excellent family pets and guard dogs if trained correctly. I think big dogs do deter burglars.

I have a Yorkie, does that count? He barks at every noise, but all anyone would have to do is pet him or give him a treat to silence him. I don't think a bigger dog is in the cards for us though...

I have 2 big dos(70 and 90 pounds) they are scary looking and both great watch dogs but if my husband is OOT they bark and growl at everything and make me more nervous. Although I guess them barking is a deterrent

LOL thanks for the diagnosis, but I'll be fine. Was just wanting some ideas on how to better protect myself and now I have an anxiety disorder? I personally think being worried about things totally out of our control (terrorists, etc)., is a bigger problem, but thanks for your concern.

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

our apt has been buglarized before, so I am particularly anxious about this (put I do have an anxiety problem...so I could just be a nutter)

dh is against getting an alarm system. which makes me sad.

when I lived in alone, I would sometimes sleep with a weapon in my bed...knife, bat, gold club... if I was alone and felt particularly vulnerable.

I would actually love a panic ROOM installed. but I have a sneaking suspicion that would be out.

I think dogs are great in general at deterring break ins...perps are usually not to afraid of kitties and bunnies.

I took a woman's self defense class and jiu jitsu a few years back...but would love a refresher course.

I'm with you on the true crime books, A. that, plus my courses in college....have really done me in.

so Alicia, you went from worrying when your dh is out late to

a worrying freak with a poor quality of life and possible need of Paxil or even elephant tranquilizers.

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

I'm sorry I even posted on this thread. I wasn't trying to be obnoxious.

Having close family members suffering from anxiety disorder and OCD makes me particularly sensitive to that - so when I read that someone is obsessed with fear, I think it's a valid point to bring up. I wasn't attacking, diagnosing, disrespecting, or in any way trying to demean ANYONE with my post. I was posting information I thought might be relevant. The OP and others think it's not. That's fine.

And FTR, I don't believe ANYWHERE did I call the OP a freak.

I am not really sure...the usual answer is "b/c we dont need one"

but he is not really a worrier. at all. ever.

he understands there is crime LOL, but doesn't really feel like anything will happen to me/him/us.

I think it may also be b/c we don't own our apt..so he sees it as an unnecessary added expense.

Re: I am constantly worried about a home invasion...

I was able to face my fear about 2 months ago when DH was put on a job that was overnights (9P-5A). He did this for about 7 weeks.

The first few days, I took Tyelonol PM to knock myself out so I wouldn't hear anything Chat Icon

Then, I figured I had to put my big girl panties on and deal with it. The next few nights were a little rough. I didn't sleep well and every little noise got me up out of the bed, along w/ poor Dottie.

Then, I don't know if it was out of pure exhaustion, or just the realization that if something is going to happen, it's going to happen whether or not I'm sitting up in bed worrying about it. But, I slept through the night no problem.

It's really the what if and worry that made it so bad. I just made sure not to watch any scary movies or true life murder stories right before I went to bed.

That's exactly how my DH is! It drives my crazy because he's totally worry free & he would probably laugh in my face if I suggested getting a panic button for our co-op. Better safe than sorry is what I think. I'm thinking I can play the baby card when we have our first & maybe he'll give into my paranoid ways.
