Re: Is it in all cultures that

I'm Italian and I've bought the outfits for both of the children that I've christened. I also came to the house early to help the mother and dress the baby (not sure if this is a cultural thing, but this is the way its always been done in my family).

Its amazing what they cost right?? I bought my nephew's and it was $300!!

I understand that it's made of Irish linen and it was imported from Ireland, but come on!! It's for a baby! Not to mention, my sister took him out of the gown shortly after the baptism so it wasn't like he wore it all day either!!! Chat Icon

I can only imagine what it will cost to have one made, though I'm hoping not as much...

at that price, you're better off removing it quickly...making the "heirloom" part possible LOL less time equals less milk spills, less grandma's pancake makeup, and less uncle artie's wretched cologne embedding itself! Chat Icon

ditto, gotta love the cheap irish (I can say that being 100% Irish myself).

I love how people say that. that fascinates me.

do you know why people say that? It's a phrase from the early 1900's. When the Irish started coming to the USA, we weren't like, we all know that. But legend states that others saw the irish as dirty, cheap, uneducated, poor folk. I've been hearing this all my life (being my great grandparents all came thru Ellis Island).

Being as I came off a plane from Ireland 8 years ago myself, I am probably the best person to defend this myth.

Perhaps in the days of your great grandparents the Irish were considered cheap, but any direct and 1st generation Irish that I know in the US (and that would be many seeing as I am president of our local AOH) are the most generous people I have come across in the US. I am friends with Hispanic, Italian, German, Polish and Jewish people and the Irish people who came to our wedding were the most generous of all the nationalities.

And yes, I did buy my nieces/goddaughters christening gowns. Both of them. And I was living in Ireland at the time.

this is what I meant when I questioned her.

it wasn't the "fact" of her statement. but that she felt she "could" say it b/c she is Irish.

I am irish too...by descent. My maiden name starts with an Mc.

but anywho, it was just the idea. I've honestly never heard the phrase. Nor have I met a cheap irishman...at least not b/c of his Irish-ness.

it just seems offensive. and it struck me as funny that we can offend each other b/c we are in the same group. it just doesn't seem right.

almost like perpetuating a falsehood. an ugly stereotype.

Re: Is it in all cultures that

My BFF's MIL bought her daughter's christening outfit when I baptized her... I bought the baby's cross.

She found a dress that she had fallen in love with, but, it was over $500 and wouldn't dream of asking me to buy her daughter that dress....

I have NEVER heard that and being irish take offense to it.

P.S. I bought both and they were like 50.00 max.

AND the "donation" for our wedding was 600.00

We, the parents, bought the Christening outfits. My mom also helped contribute to buying them. It's not a tradition in our family for the godparents to buy it.

Re: Is it in all cultures that

My godson wore a gown that was handed down. I would only buy the outfit if I asked the mom first. As a mom, I will probably buy the outfit myself.
