Sirius or XM?
Ok, so I was planning to buy Sirius for my DH for Christmas. But when I went shopping I learned about the differences between Sirius and XM. Most importantly the sports (XM has baseball and hockey and DH would be more into that than Sirius's football and basketball). He's not a Howard Stern fan. So sports and Stern aside is there a major difference in the music stations that I should know about before choosing? Any personal preferences out there? TIA - I'm confused and want to get my shopping done!

I used to have Sirius radio and I went with it over XM for absolutely no reason at all. I think I just liked their dog logo. Seriously though...I never had a problem with it, they have great stations, and I cant wait to get it again.
I've never had XM, and dont have any friends who have it, so I dont have an opinion on it. I would say that if you think he's going to be listening to the sports stations a lot, then you should probably go with XM since those are the sports he likes. I'm sure theres not really many differences between the two as far as quality goes.

we have sirius
i find that XM is much more comprehensive in their channel selections and playlists, so if he's a hardcore music fan vs. a casual one, i say XM.
we're casual and I'm an NFL nut, hence the reason we got sirius

I have Sirius and love it. My friend has XM and loves hers. Its basically the same channels music wise. They are going to merge eventually, not sure when that is happening though.

I also love my Sirius (I haven't listened to the NY radio stations since getting it). Yes, mostly love it for Howard Stern but we do listen to other channels and enjoy them very much. XM and Sirius are in the works of merging as dottie mentioned - I am curiuos to see the changes when they go through

I have XM...and absolutely love it!
But, I don't think there is much difference between the two aside from the types of sports as you said and XM has O & A/Ron and Fez while Sirius has Howard.

Dh HAD XM with the GMC car, I have Sirius and we would never find any music on his XM, but we would take my car with the Sirius to listen to music.
He liked XM for Opie and Ant, not sure if they are on there anymore but DH cancelled XM after his free subscription ran out. I am getting him Sirius for Christmas...my understanding was that XM has more "garage bands" or "up and coming bands" when we listened to his XM we were like "who is this" never heard of a lot bands played. I LOVE  my Sirius.

Same here. Plus the sports. I just got DH a portable unit so he can listen on the train and he was able to listen to ACC basketball the other night. He usually misses most of the game by the time he gets home.

My car came with XM and I love it. I just bought DH sirus for his car and he loves it. Not that it's going to make an immediate impact, but I believe there was just an agreed merger of XM and Sirus.

The companies have agreed to merge, but the FCC has not approved the merger as of yet.

I have Sirius and love it for Howard. There are plenty of great music channels on Sirius. I know nothing about XM.

We have XM in our car -- just activated it last month. So far, we love it.
I was surprised that there are commercials on satellite radio, though. They don't occur as often and there aren't as many as FM radio, but they're certainly there.

they have commercials on the talk sites (as does sirius) and a few music that are operated by clear channel.. to add some revenue .. to counter the claim from sirius they added more music stations commercial free.. so they could still "say" we have more commercial free music then sirius
theres my random tidbit of the day ...
xm IMO has better music then sirius i test drove both online before making the decision years ago and i heart my xm to this day...the musics great, ope/ant , ron/fez rule too ... made my commute so much better the combo of all three things

We have sirius. I had XM for free for about 3 months and i hated it. They pretty much played the radio edited version of all the songs. And i just was not fond of it at all. IMO Sirius is definately better

I've never heard an edited song on XM.

I've never heard an edited song on XM.
Never had sirius either, though, so I can't compare.
They edited the curses that were in the songs

My FH hates all sports, but he listens to howard stern.

Sirius is a lot better. I have had Sirius for 2yrs now and I love it. They have a great assortment of all kinds of music. I am into Rock and Alternative and Sirius has a handful of great channels.
We used to have XM at my old job and the selection of channels to listen to was very disappointing. I was only able to find 2 channels that I could listen to.
My Father just got Sirius in his car and he loves it too!
