Re: If I were to move to San Francisco....
Thanks for all your help, I need to do a little more research first and then I will throw some ideas out there.
I'm not moving as of yet, just not sure if I am where I want to be right now.

Re: If I were to move to San Francisco....
I guess it depends on your personality.
Things may have changed since I've been there years ago. But I like The Haight because it's bohemian and diverse. Youngish crowd. Victorian homes on tree-lined blocks. Mostly flat. Lots of shops.
Pacific Heights is a yuppyish group. Union Square is in the middle of the city..tall buildings, big stores. I guess I wouldn't live in Union Square.
The real estate market in SF is like NYC/NY area in terms of prices.

Re: If I were to move to San Francisco....
I lived there for 9 years. FM with the neighborhoods you are thinking about and I can give you whatever info I can.
A HUGE factor would be whether or not you plan to have a car. Some neighborhoods are centrally located, more affordable and fun to live in but you would be in parking hell if you had a car to worry about.

Are there areas I can live in that are urbanish that I can have a car and not be paying crazy rent?

The more affordable areas where having a car would be easier would be inner Richmond or Sunset Districts, the outer Mission, Japantown, Noe Valley, and maybe Bernal Heights. I moved away in 2000, so some areas may have changed slightly. The closer you get to downtown, the more $$ the rents and the more congested the streets. There are some nice, newer apartment complexes South of Market, near the Embarcadero that have parking, but I am not sure how the rents are.
For parking, I would definitely stay away from the Haight, North Beach, Chinatown, and most of the real "downtown" areas - the Financial District, Union Square.
