Warning: don't always trust Frontline

Casey stayed over at the kennel this weekend and had a bath today. When I went to get her, the bather said she found tons of ticks on my little girl Chat Icon I had been feeling bumps on her but with all her fur I couldn't get a good look. Seems like she got them and they burrowed. I have to take her to the vet to get tested for Lyme disease. Chat Icon I gave her the Frontline drop EVERY month from April through October. She loves to play in the yard and roll in the grass...I feel like such a bad mommy. Chat Icon

You have to do it until standing water freezes. I am still giving Misty Frontline...the ticks stay alive as long as the temp is above 40 degrees.

I was just going to post this. My vet recommends giving flea and tick prevention year round, and def heartworm protection year round (if you can afford it and the dog tolerates it all).

I don't believe Frontline kills ALL types of ticks so you cannot bank on it working. Yes,go get her tested for Lyme, etc, but don't panic. It is treatable in dogs, more so than humans. I just had my doggie tested last month.

oh wow that stinks! i would most definately look into a getting a new vet!
Mine always told us to do it until the ground freezes, unless you live in a heavily wooded area or grassy area...so when we told her we were moving to NC, she said to give it to them year round.

Same thing our vet said. We gave Daisy her treatment last night for the next month. I have to order more from Foster Smith now.

Frontline does work. Unfortunately you stopped in October and it is now December, so she was unprotected for 2 months, that is a long time. I use Frontline Plus on my dog all year round.

You can purchase Frontline Plus at your vet, Petland Discounts, PETCO etc. It may be less expensive then ordering online.

Just asked my DH, and he said the same thing, the ground has to be frozen solid and stay solid before you stop the Frontline.

YEs, how did things go?

And can I ask if your dog has been in a wooded area or your backyard? I am trying to figure out what risks our pets have of ticks in our own backyards.

Re: Warning: don't always trust Frontline

Hi everyone Chat Icon

The vet examined her and gave her antibiotics (just in case) and eardrops bc she had ear mites. He said to let him know if she starts showing any symptoms like lameness etc. He said he did not think she needed the blood test.

We do lived in a wooded area, somewhat (in NJ) and we take her to the dog park a lot....plus at the kennel she goes to , the dogs are allowed to run during the day and there is a wooded area bordering the kennel.

If you need peace of mind, you can get the blood test done.
We were going to do it for Casey a couple of weeks ago.

ITA. I don't want to make you paranoid but if you can afford the test, I really would get it. Signs may show up too late, when the dog is possibly very illl. Not triyng to scare you but since you said you mistrusted your vet, I would actually push for the test. JMO, please don't take offense.

Re: Warning: don't always trust Frontline

I agree, get the blood test. It is not expensive. Also, if you have a cat and you allow the cat outdoors, more than likely the cat will have ear mites and will transfer back to your dog. Dog and cats do not belong outside, only to be walked or play (supervised) in a fenced in back yard. If they are allowed outside, both cats and dogs must be treated with either revolution which kills ear mites, fleas, ticks and mange mites or Frontline which is just for fleas and ticks. I know...involved in animal rescue.

Never leave your pets outside alone, never..someone can open the gate, dog can run off..same with cats, they climb fence...and always, always have id on your pet..even in the house...you can be away, home can be burgalarized, fire, anything can happen and without id...the pet is history.
