Photographer help, with picture inside
My SIL had a photoshoot done with her family and they took pictures infront of their tree. How do I get the lights to look like this? I cropped out my nephew but he isn't blurry. I have a Nikon D40 so I don't know if I am even able to do it. Image Attachment(s):

I think that if you focus on your nephew the lights will be out of focus like that since they are in the distance.

The further away with the larger the lens, the better that effect will be.
That is called depth of field, when it focuses like that.

i think if you turn up the fstop it will do the trick.. that pic was probably taken at like 3.5 or so... maybe 4.. try turning it up at least to 5.6.. or higher.. and see what you get.

Thanks everyone, I will read the manual and see if I can figure it out.
Do you think I will be able to still the effect if I don't have a large lense?
