cleaning products

So I just cleaned my whole kitchen...fridge, stove top, counters, sink, etc. I used Fantastik on mostly everything, but used Soft scrub on the sink. Was this a bad idea? The house needs to be cleaned thoroughly not just today, but in the future during my pregnancy of course. DH doesn't know how to do it like I do and he already does so much around the house. Are you ladies avoiding certain cleaning products or cleaning tasks while preggers?

Yes, the chemicals are not good. Just today will be okay, but you need to have your DH do it from now on. Or buy organic prodcuts. My friend bought all of her cleaning supplies at whole foods that were safe and chemical free when preggo.

We hired a cleaning lady to come every other week (I also travel a lot for work so we had been talking about it already but being preggo made it a priority).

Re: cleaning products

I've cleaned my house for the last 31 weeks with softscrub and fantastik and never had a problem. My DH wouldn't even know where to begin and there is no way we could have a cleaning lady come it with the two dogs. If you are worried call your doctor but I'm sure it isn't a problem.

I was told when PG not to be around any cleaning products. I ended up switching to all Organic which was the best decision ever. Esp now that Andrew is here.

Yikes! Now I'm scared. Guess I'll have to make DH pick up some of the tasks. I'm sure he won't mind since it is for mine and the baby's safety. Where can I find these organic cleaning products?

Re: cleaning products

I've read that as long as the area is well ventilated and you wear gloves, you are fine.

That said, I use mostly organic cleaners.

Re: cleaning products

Ditto that... I keep the area that I'm cleaning in well ventilated and clean away.... Even tho Brian is a neat freak, he doesn't scrub the way I like it scrubbed.... So I do it all myself.

Re: cleaning products

I can't always wait for DH to see the dirt in the tub before he cleans it, and he never ever sees the dirt and grease on the stove so I just do it.

Just make sure to keep the area well ventilated and take your time with it.

Re: cleaning products

I'd go the organic cleaning products route. For now, I managed to finagle DH to do the cleaning, but I feel slightly guilty. But I plan on buying organic cleaners soon.

I was never told to use other cleaners. such as organic. As long as there is decent ventilation I'm good.

I don;t think any of my friends went out and bought organic cleaners. I will ask the dr. how he feels and what he tells his patients. However, I understnad it's a personal choice.

Re: cleaning products

I ended up getting a cleaning lady every other week. I still clean on the alternate week and the kitchen everytime we cook. I just wanted to avoid the tilex and bleach smelling things!

Re: cleaning products

DH has picked up most of the cleaning minus the laundry, dishes and vaccuming but the other things i can't do because the chemiclas make me nausious.. no money to hire a cleaning lady so what gets done gets done what doesnt will have to wait till after the baby gets here

I use non toxic cleaning products- Imus- greening the cleaning spray.

In addition, I use a vinegar solution(half water and some vinegar). Vinegar is a natural disenfectant. For the tub and toillet I use a half of a lemon( natural little scrub brush) and baking soda. Healthier for you, and better for the environment.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much--as others said, good ventilation and gloves should help. I do avoid stuff that I see as pretty toxic (like Tilex and anything with ammonia or bleach) for the most part. You can also get green cleaners if you are worried, but I think you are fine.

Generally, I believe that cleaning products are bad for your body, pregnant or non-pregnant, so I have switched to using organic cleaning products by Seventh Generation.

Re: cleaning products

I'm 19 weeks and have been using cleaning products. I never thought not to use them.

I'll keep windows open next time around and maybe ask DH to pitch in and help!
