Poor Daisy.....Tuesday UPDATE
We took her to the vet this morning to get spayed and we'll be picking her up tonight btw 3-5pm. She was shaking and crying in our arms when the vet came out to get her, and she didn't want to leave us. We both left feeling so sad, and she gave us her whimpery look all morning as we ate breakfast and she couldn't eat under Dr's orders.
We're going to call around 10am and see how it all went.....but she can't come home until later tonight.
And we spoke with the vet about the throwing up. She lost some weight in the last week and a half (7.1 to 6.7 pounds), so he suggested we cut back her food at each meal, so we can give her food before bed time, so she won't get sick, and/or give her a 1/4 tablet of pepcid AC a day to help with her acidity stomach.
UPDATE @12pm: The Vet called and said the surgery went well and she's recuperating. They asked us to come btw 3-5pm to pick her up.
UPDATE @8pm: She was so happy to see us at the vet - she wouldn't stop moving around. So we've had Daisy home for about 3 hours. She won't drink anything, and she puked about 2 times now on the kitchen tile. I feel bad - she hasn't eaten anything in 24 hours. She has done two no no's by jumping onto the couch and off of it, and we scolded her lightly. She's now curled up sleeping.
SO, my question - the iodine is one her stomach and she's been licking it. We try to intervene as often as we can, but not always. The stitches will absolve in 10 days, so there's no lamp shaped cone for her, just pain medication 2x a day.
How dangerous is the iodine that is still on her tummy near the incision????????????
UPDATE TUESDAY AM: No one sleeped last night. DH and I tried to remain motionless in bed, so we wouldn't disturb Daisy, but she moved around a lot on her own anyway. She kept crying in that puppy voice and kept making the motions to throw up, but she had nothing in her tummy to throw up, so it was a very long night for all of us. She ate her next pain pill without any issues this morning and she ate her bowl of food and drank water and was able to do her business. She was sleeping most of the morning in her bed still making the noises, although not as badly as last night.
It kills me that she's in pain - I just want to make it go away for her.

Re: Poor Daisy.....
Poor girl. We give Katie Pepcid AC, she has tendencies to throw up. Usuallly its because she eats too fast and then runs around.

Re: Poor Daisy.....
I understand, Riley got spayed two weeks ago and she was so sad and couldn't eat or drink either.
She was so happy to come home the next day
Today we actually went to take out her stitches, they said she healed well, but have some slight swelling around the incision, but they said that was normal in active dogs.
Hopefully everything goes well!

YAY!! I was checking for an update! To me getting them after surgery is harder because of the silly lampshade they have to wear

Re: Poor Daisy.....Evening UPDATE
Honestly I dont know.
If the vet didnt mention anything of it then I guess it cant be too serious. She doesnt have to wear a cone or anything? I would just try to stop it as mush as possible.

Re: Poor Daisy.....Evening UPDATE
Betsy, Riley didn't have a cone on her either...but she stayed at the vet over night for observation after she was spayed. we she came home her belly was clean. whenever she went to lick down there I would just tell her NO firmly...she was actually very good about not paying much attention to it. I'm sure if it was harmful they would have washed it off her. But I would just tell her NO and keep a watchful eye on her.

Glad to hear she is home safe.
Our vet recommended we take a doggie tshirt or shirt and put it on her, protecting her incision. If no one will be home, make sure she is safe and cannot choke herself!!! But when you are home, this is a great way to keep her from licking the incision.
We did this with our girl doggie as she kept licking it...when we put the doggie sweatshirt on her, she could not reach the incision and stopped licking it. Then it healed.
Also NO jumping. Try your best to limit that. My girl doggie did that and caused herself to get a seroma (fluid) in the incision site, and that took longer to heal. Poor baby would squeal as she jumped! So we had to try to stop her from jumping.

Re: Poor Daisy.....Evening UPDATE
If she keeps licking at it, I would ask for a cone. Misty started licking at hers three days after the surgery and opened up the stitches. They will actually pull the stitches out given the opportunity. We had to take her to an emergency clinic to have it looked at. They told us to put the cone back on her for another few days.

ITA! Also, my vet had said no food or water until the next day because they may vomit from the anesthesia from the surgery, so I wouldn't worry too much that she threw up.

Re: Poor Daisy.....Tuesday UPDATE
I am sure by the time you get home today she will be her normal self!
I know when we get the kittens spayed/neutered they are coming home with a collar so they don't lick or try to take out the stitches.

Aww Betsy!!! When we got Kasey she was already spayed so I can't really offer any advice. Just wanted to wish Daisy well, hopefully she'll be feeling better when you get home. Are you or DH stopping by for lunch to check on her?

Yeah, Bob did. She was asleep in her crate on her blanket.
She's a ball of energy right now, although she's starting to slow down now.

It was heartbreaking to put Oscar through the neutering procedure and I know that a spay is an even bigger deal.
