What are your thoughts? Do YOU think it's still taboo to meet a significant other online?

And would you admit it if you did? :)

I would never be hesitant to admit it if I did.

My fried met her DH on Match.com. Great guy. Lived 10 mins from us...

If I was single I would do it in a heartbeat!

I met DH online in 99...at that time it was taboo - but now, not so much. I lied about how we met for YEARS! Some people still don't know the truth. If I had met DH now...I would not lie about it.

Surprising alot of people are still reluctant to consider posting an online personals ad.

I would do it again in a heartbeat too since I not have met my wonderfully smart and handsome hubby online otherwise. He came from a totally different state and social background.

Besides, what other avenue for meeting men could you possibly set a criteria for what you want? :D

Re: Is It Still Taboo to Meet Through Online Personals?

I'm kind of surprised I didn't meet my husband online - I find everything ELSE online!!!

My sister met her BF on myspace, my co-worker met her fiance on Facebook. Just goes to show you that you don't even have to post a personal ad - sometimes you just find each other!

I don't think its taboo, I met my DH online over 3 years ago and we were married last month. I do feel though there are certain precautions you need to take like meeting in a public place, and having someone call you during the meeting making sure everything is ok.

i hope not, that's how i met my DH! Chat Icon

that said, we e-mailed for months before we agreed to meet and even then people knew where I was, i drove myself there and back and had my cell phone with me. ... you have to take precautions. not everyone on those things are honest.

its so funny - I was also a little embarrassed to admit how DH and I met - and that was in 2002.

now that I think about it, saying we met online sounds a lot more interesting than 'we met in a bar' Chat Icon

Re: Is It Still Taboo to Meet Through Online Personals?

My instinct says no, amongst people our age, but the older generation, YES.

I FREELY admit that I met DH on Jdate. I mentioned it at work once, and the woman who heads up the whole office overheard me. BIG mistake - we were in training in New Orleans, with virtually EVERY SINGLE manager throughout the U.S., AND the deputy secretary for the U.S. Dept. of Education. Each manager was asked to introduce their new employee, and you know what my manager said?

She stood up, in a roomful of 150 people, and said, "this is beth. She married an Israeli, and she met him in the MOST unusual way. You'll have to ask her about it!"

So, for the rest of the week, everyone came up to me, completely curious and fascinated about how I met DH. Most were my age, because it was new employee training, so when I told them, they were like "oh". Yeah, not so intriguing after all, is it? But, in the eyes of many over 40, yeah, it's still "Taboo".

I think it definitely used to be, but I think its so common now, especially with myspace and facebook, its really just becoming commonplace.

Re: Is It Still Taboo to Meet Through Online Personals?

I met my DH online but not through a personal. I just saw him online & we started chatting through IM's & then e-mails. This went on for about 5 months before we met in person and that was at a very public place for lunch.

Yes and no.

I don't think anything of it if I hear a couple met online. Same thing as meeting in a bar, through a friend, a club, whatever.

But I notice that older folks tend to be wary of the internet, or think it's "dirty". Chat Icon

I'm sure it will be more accepted as it becomes more common, though.

Not taboo at all in my opinion. These sites bring people together who would not ordinarily meet...how can that be bad. I met so many people over the last 2 years from jdate and most of them touched my life in one way or another...even if it was a small way.

I met my SO on Jdate and would never have met him if not through that venue. With that said my family and friends know how we met and his have been told an entirely different story...so silly but he promised on our wedding day he will come clean!

If there wasn't online dating...we would be stuck being set up and meeting in bars etc. Online is so much more efficient and you have so much more control.

I have been to 8 jdate weddings over the last 5 years...it seems to be working.

Re: Is It Still Taboo to Meet Through Online Personals?

I guess it depends on which personals.

eharmony and match.com not taboo.

Iliketobespanked.com and findmeasexslave.com a little less accepted.
