Dogs in Cars
I'm just curious, for those that think it's bad to leave the dog in the car...Why?
I'm not talking in extreme heat or cold - normal conditions.
Misty would rather be in the car waiting for me, than home so I tend to take her all over with me on the weekends. We generally go to the park first and let her run around for a couple hours and then I may do whatever errands on the way home and she waits in the car. She loves the car and if I'm not there, just curls up on my seat.
So, I'm not sure why some think it's such a terrible thing.

Re: Dogs in Cars
I think if its not too hot, or too cold why not. In my opinion, its just another way to spend more time together, especially since I work all week and they are crated.

Re: Dogs in Cars
I agree that my dog would rather by in the car with me then at home also. He goes crazy when I say the magic words "want to go for a ride!" I think it is ok if I am just running in somewhere for like 15-20min. I leave the windows cracked and would never do it if it was too hot/cold

This is how I feel too. Besides, I could just see her ripping into the seat while I was gone.
I'll take her out to the pet store where I can bring her in with me. Or if I'm just going out to get gas bc then I'm not really leaving her alone.

But, the other side of the argument is that you can bring your kids into the store - you can't bring the dog in.

Re: Dogs in Cars
My dog LOVES the car and when the temperature is ok for her to be in there with a cracked window, she would rather be in there than be with us in the store that we can't bring her into. All you have to do is mention the word "car" and she's at the front door begging to get outside.
At home she's miserable, she'd rather be with us, even though for a few minutes she would be without us in her favorite place.

Re: Dogs in Cars
We are with our dog a lot so when we go to stores and stuff we leave him home. He gets protective of the car and if he were in it by himself he would be barking his head off everytime someone came near it.

When we let her out the front door, she runs straight to my truck and stands there staring at us wagging her nub!!

I agree I mean common sense I see nothing wrong with it. Otis is left in the car maybe tops 10mins while I run in and out quickly.

I would personally be too afraid of someone stealing my dogs. I have heard of this and just won't chance it.

Personally I feel that comparison is like apples to oranges. You wouldnt leave your child home alone would you? Do you leave your dog home alone? Two completely different things.
I dont take Lucy with me but that is because she HATES the car. However on a comfortable day, for a short errand, I dont see an issue with leaving the dog in the car. Now I wouldnt go to the mall for an hour but 15 minutes into the supermarket, sure.
But on a comfortable day, for a short errand, I wouldn't leave a child in the car so I don't think it's different - talking about cars only. And again, just my opinion.

I don't think it is cruel to leave a dog in the car for 5 minutes while I run into a store. They love the car and are very happy to be with me.

Totally the same here.
And I would never compare my child to my dog.

Re: Dogs in Cars
i try not to... but that's because he's VERY misbehaved if i leave him in the car by himself. even when i park directly in front of the bagel store and he can watch me through the glass the entire time - the whole 60 seconds while i make a cup of coffee and pay for it - he cries and barks as though i'm never coming back. and sometimes pees on the seats it's frustrating because i like taking him out with me and he LOVES riding in the car... but i can only take him to and from places; i can't leave him even for a few minutes. but to answer the OP (sorry went off on a tangent), if it's not hot or cold out, i don't see anything wrong with running a quick errand (like to the bank or food store or something) and leaving them in the car for a short period of time.

same here....Tiger gets so excited when I put my shoes on and I grab the cars keys, so I take him. I get more upset if I dont take him and see his sad face. I only take him when it is NOT too hot or cold out and only if Im running in and out of say the bank or Post Office. I wont leave him in the car and be in a place for along time. I see many people leave thier dogs in the car and then go out to dinner...that is NOT right.
