Ex smokers - I am really craving a cigarette

I have been having such strong cravings for the past 2 months for a cigarette. I have been able to not give in (and it has been SO HARD to do). Thankfully everytime I think about going to the store to get some, I have to take DD with me and she is the reason I won't smoke.
But - it gets so bad that I have dreamt about smoking again.
How long does this phase usually last?

Has anyone ever transitioned from a smoker to a "social" smoker?

I did many years ago...and then it launched me right back into a full fledged pack a day or more smoker

I had to quit all over again

Don't do it! But to answer your question, the urge NEVER goes away.

I had the urge after having DS and gave in. Now I have one a day (at night) and don't even finish it. I don't know why I bother. Chat Icon

To be honest, I still get cravings for cigarettes. It's been 4 years and I still long for them, some times more then others. I never transitioned to a social smoker since you can't really smoke socially anywhere anymore.

The two things that keep me from having just one:

1) The first one is going to taste awful, it may make you a little light headed and it's going to hurt your chest. It's not like when you smoked it feels good, it's not pleasant when you haven't had one in a while. (this was my experience)

2) To get past that bad taste thing, I would need 3 or 4 cigarettes which in the past was enough to get me smoking again. And I don't ever want to have to quit smoking again. It was bad enough the first time.

Hang in there - the cravings do spread out a bit and are managable.

I've been craving it ALOT lately too. I was even saying to DH the other day that i can't believe how much i've been thinking about it... especially since its not during a "trigger" time anniversary (like 3 mth, 6 mths, 1 year, etc...). But, i guess i associate it with fall, and sitting outside, enjoying the weather and having a cigarette? that's the only thing i can think of.

Still, i won't have even ONE. i know my personality, and that if i have one, it will just be opening the flood gates. Its either all or nothing, and i've come too far to ever go back, ya know?

Think about DD... think about all of the gross reasons that you quit... think about the fact that IF you tried it again and got addicted again how HARD it is to quit again (its much easier to get through a craving now, then to quit allover again). Then, i also think about how HORRIBLE i was to DH when i was quitting Chat Icon I was SO irritable, and honestly, i think about that and how unfair it would be to put him through that again.

go onto whyquit.org and read some of the stories... but PLEASEEEEE don't consider being a social smoker. Just tell yourself that its not even an option. I don't think that Social smokers get a nicer form of Social Cancer. Its just not worth it Chat Icon

I'm going to echo everyone else.

I quit years and years ago cold turkey without any problems.

I have a DH who still smokes and it makes me MENTAL and I complain all the time about it and how I don't understand how he can do something that is killing him.

However, every now and then I have the urge that will last for a few days.

My "urge killer" is to know that I would lose all credibility with DH if I were to have even one drag.

Like Neenie said think about DD and how hard you tried to quit.

Donna - don't do it!!

I was a smoker for a long time.
I quit back in 2002 - Let me tell you - my cravings got sooooo bad after I had DD. My DH smokes and I was sooooo tempted to just take them from him - but it isn't worth it.

It was soooo hard to quit - do you want to go through that again when you want to quit again?? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Think about how empowering it is to be able to NOT smoke. Think about how nicotine USED to have you under it's control but you beat it. Look at the people standing outside buildings today, in the rain, smoking. And you are not. And then just imagine if ONE stupid cigarette were to lead you back to that lifestyle. You would hate it.

I've been having more cravings lately too, maybe Neenie is right - maybe it's the weather...

Oh and that first cigarette after quitting tastes NASTY.

I quit a couple of months ago and yes, I still get cravings but I know if I become a "social smoker" I will jump right back into the swing of things.

Hang in there, think of your DD and it will pass.

Re: Ex smokers - I am really craving a cigarette

I just quit.. I'm on day three and this is torture so I know what you mean about cravings.

My main motivation is I want to live a long time and see my baby girl grow up, get married and have children!

My dad died before I got married the first time, and my mom died 4 years before I had my daughter.

I never want her to go through that.

Re: Ex smokers - I am really craving a cigarette

Right there with you on the cravings. Although for me it hasn't been a recent development, it has been there almost every day since I quit in December. What gets rid of it for me is when a smoker that has just put out a cigarette walks by my office and I get a whiff of the odor and remind myself that I used to smell like that, and now I don't.

Whether you smoke one cig an hour or one cig a week, you are a smoker and you are damaging your health. Do what you can to get the cravings under control, but PLEASE don't smoke even one more cigarette! Think of your DD!

My dad always ate right and worked out. He quit smoking several times, always returning (except the last time about 5 years ago)... Smoking damaged his heart so severely he had to have emergency triple bypass 3 weeks before my wedding at only 65 years old. A healthy man who ran 4 miles a day was cut open from neck to belly button, his heart stopped, and sections of his arteries replaced. He wasn't allowed to dance at my wedding, except for a slow dance with me and one with my mom. He was back and forth to doctors almost every other day after the surgery and even landed in the ER less than a week before my wedding with a horrible allergic reaction to one of the many meds he had to be on. He was coughing nonstop for weeks, had pain and fatigue from the surgery, complications from the medications, and mild depression for a while due to all the stress of the surgery and its very, very difficult recovery. Do you wish this on your DD or your family one day? NO! So, please, I beg you, don't smoke even one more. Had my dad stopped smoking for good that first time he quit, he probably never would have needed the bypass.

I KNOW it's hard - but find a way! Keep a pic of your DD with you at all times and pull it out for strength / inspiration when you need it maybe? Consider the nicotine gum for when you have cravings? That helped my dad ultimately quit - now he just chews regular mint gum instead...

Re: Ex smokers - I am really craving a cigarette

I tried the social smoking thing and honestly, it doesn't work. And if you think it's working, that's because you're still in the early phases of it. I truly believe this.

Sure, I thought it worked in the beginning - I'd go out, have a few drinks, smoke a few cigarettes and then nothing for a few weeks. But then it was EVERY time I went out to have a drink I had to have a cigarette. Then instead of bumming one off of someone else, I had to buy a pack. And then, well...I had a pack right there so why not smoke them. Eventually, I came back to being a full fledged smoker and I had to quit AGAIN.

I've been thinking of cigarettes lately - I quit in January and now I'm pregnant so there's absolutely NO WAY I'd pick up a cigarette now, but I wonder if it's something in the weather that's making so many people crave it right now.

The first cigarette is the one that brings you back, not the 2nd or the 10th or the 20th. Stay strong! Chat Icon Chat Icon
