"you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

Anyone remember that episode of Seinfeld???

That's what it's like in my office, but for breast cancer instead of AIDS. Pink breast cancer awareness and fundraising everywhere.

I have strong feelings about segmented fundraising like this, since my family has been hit hard by less common forms of cancer that have significantly fewer treatment options, no early detection tools and a serious lack of funding. I donate to those foundations.

Anyone else feel this way? Or, will I be alone in being branded a horrible shrew for not wearing jeans and a pink ribbon???

Re: "you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

i'm in charge of this for my office every year (doing the collection today, actually). i NEVER think anything negative about anyone who doesn't buy the ribbon, etc... i know myself, i donate Alot of $$ every year annonymously or through people doing the walks... i dont advertise that i do or need to wear the ribbon to prove it... so i dont expect anyone else to feel that they should have to, either.

i have the one on my badge, i wear it all year.. to each his own, but i dont think anyone should feel obligated to do it Chat Icon

Re: "you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

I do a lot to raise money for breast cancer research, but I don't wear the ribbon all month - I don't even have one on today... I don't even own one.

I am wearing pink today, but I wear p ink 35% of the time and it has nothing to do with it being October.

Having lost someone to breast cancer and having my mom as a survivor makes it a cause near and dear to me. I have lost family members to struggles with less well-known types of cancer, too, but I believe ALL cancer research is beneficial to finding a cure. Many forms of cancer are related, and I think strides made in one area certainly help other areas.

You shouldn't at all have to justify NOT wearing a ribbon or pink or whatever for any reason... I can't even believe someone would comment on that.

To each his own!!!

I wear a bracelet similar to this - the colored beads each represent a different form of cancer and the clear bead represents a general cancer awareness.

I really like this, where did you get it?

To the OP, I have worn the ribbon in the past and did the Avon Walk a few years ago, but I respect everyone's right to choose what to contribute to and what to participate in at the office.

A few years ago, I told the person at work in charge of the secret santa I no longer wanted to participate - you would have thought I told her I shot someone by the look of horror on her face. Chat Icon

I don't judge anyone who doesn't feel that they want to contribute.. for WHATEVER the reason. I wouldn't think you are a shrew at all. Chat Icon

On the other hand - regardless of what I donate privately - if the office has a fundraiser I will usually kick in my token $5. I haven't found a fundraiser that I disagree with so it is money to a good cause - even if it isn't "my" cause. This is a totally personal thing though - and if other people don't feel the same way then that's all good for them!

Re: "you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

I don't think less of people who don't donate when we have fundraisers at work.

However, I really hate it when we have fundraisers for different charities and certain cliches in my office have to ask one another "well, are you doing it?" "B/C I will if you do." makes me so mad, like they can't think for themselves and just give if they can.

Re: "you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

Where the ribbon of whatever you feel most strongly about. Wear it with pride amd just tell others you support another "form" of cancer research.

Like you, my cancer isn't common and I get sad that it's not just CANCER awareness month as there are SO many cancers out there that need the money for research

same hereChat Icon My family has had many forms of cancer come in and out of our life. I feel strong about breast cancer, but there are others too, and sometimes people forget there's more then 5 or 10 different cancers out there

Re: "you don't wear the ribbon?!?"

There comes a point where you just can't donate and fully "support" EVERY cause.

Yes, Breast Cancer is important and devastating and we need to do more for it, but my family is seriously affected by MS, Diabetes, Autism, Testicular Cancer, Skin Cancer and Prostate Cancer.

Those are the "main" causes I support.

I would be decked out in ribbons every day!!

But I still donate the $5 work asks for for every other cause each month. I just don't "advertise". Chat Icon
