We got a nastygram!

We are litterbugs! We got a certified letter from the town that we had garbage in our drivewayChat Icon . We had a few pieces of wood in siding in the carport thatwas sticking out into the driveway and that is against the law I guess.
Someone must have complained, right? The town doesn't drive around looking for this stuff do they?
We cleaned it up the best we could today - but the letter was dated 9/10 - we weren't able to get the PO to pick it up until today. The letter said that they were coming back to inspect in 5 days - is that 5 days from the date of the letter, or from when we picked it up?
I am so worried they came back and it was the same - I don't want a summons or a fine!!
What should I do?

Re: We got a nastygram!

I would assume 5 days from the postmark. They have no idea when you take it out of your mailbox.

Will a tarp over the stuff be OK?

Are you for real??? Chat Icon You actually got a complaint about that??

F'n ballsy....considering its your driveway and I assume its not going on to someone elses property. And I can see if you had it like that forever but arent you guys doing a ton of work to your house also??

Do you have a dumpster by the way?

Re: We got a nastygram!

I know our town is like this too. But of course our house is better looking then it used to be no matter what considering the old owners mess. They used to get fined all the time, but they really had a mess. So what if you had a couple of things sitting around. Chat Icon Hopefully it wasn't a noisy neighbor. I know that our town code enforcement drives around, because they tried giving us a summons the first day we owned the house because the old owners left there garbage everywhere, but that was completely different from your situation. I understood why this guy wanted to give us a summons, but for that little amount at your house - that is crazy. People should mind there own business. You are trying to make you house more beautiful and they should be happy about that. GL!

Yeah... I am going to have to call the town because if they came again, nothing was changed until yesterday when we actually saw the letter.
We had a huge dumpster that we filled up when we did the major demolition, these were a few things that have come up in the interim. We were actually going to call that 1-800 got junk place for an estimate when we move in next week so they could take it all away- we just wanted to wait until we were completely done.
I have actually apologized to the neigbors about the it - before we saw the letter- and they told me it was fine, they know we are doing work and are making the house a lot nicer than it was before we bought it!
So I don't think it was a neighbor, if it was a complaint.
I just can't believe it, I mean it wasn't piles and piles of stuff everywhere, it was maybe 10 pieces of wood, some scraps of siding and a stump. Is that really so bad?

agreed. is there a # on the letter that you could call to notify them that its been taken care of already? alot of times they just SAY that they're gonna be there in 5 days just to scare you into getting it done quickly but in reality they drive by like 2 weeks later.

Sadly, Lauren, sounds like a neighbor complained. We had this happen to us about garbage as well!Chat Icon

Call the town about the summons - I believe they can tell you when they will come around for an inspection and you can state the time difference in getting the letter, etc.

If you run into any issues, let me know. I'll see if DH can help.

Re: We got a nastygram!

I called the town and actually spoke to the inspector who went back yesterday BEFORE we cleaned it up!
But I told him we just got the letter yesterday and took care of it, so he is going to go back today to check it out and close out the file.
Ugh, so annoying.
He told me we just have to put those things in the back of the carport so they are not so visisble from the street.

Yeah, I was worried they were going to be nasty and treat me like a littering scumbag, lol.
I apologized like 100 times and told him we didn't know. He was very nice about it.

I think the Town is used to hearing owners grumble about neighbors - I think it's the repeat offenders they have issues with!

You know, I just wish if someone had a problem, that they had come to us first - either just told us or left a note in the mailbox.

That would be too easy! Welcome to home ownership on LI!Chat Icon DH and I were livid when we got our summons too.

And I was walking Daisy and met up with a neighbor and she bragged on how she called the Town on her neighbor for having a messy yard and a ripped siding/gutter from a storm.

Do people have nothing better to do then complain about their neighbors?

my neighbor is like that - luckily they like us and know we are fixing up our house so they havent complained about our garbage. we keep it neat, and like the OP we had a dumpster but now its just smaller items. people need to get a life - you are FIXING your house - which means better resale for them!

People are afraid to ask directly.

How do I know this? I have a neighbor we were friendly with, and one day we asked him nicely if he could kindly lower his radio, instead of us calling the cops on him and being sneaky.

He refused to our faces, and now plays the radio on spite and we do not speak. He was very mean and confrontational and nasty to us, no matter how nice we were or how we tried to reason with him. Moral of the story to us, we got punished for being honest b/c now we can't even call on him without a war starting.

So I learned why people are afraid to directly make a request, b/c if you do ignore the request, and they have to call on you, you will know it is them and there will be a lot of tension. Like us now, if we call on him since we obviously can't reason with him, he will know it was us and that will only make matters worse.

So we feel we screwed ourselves by trying to be adult and upfront with someone who is very childish, so people never know how the neighbor will react to the request...sad to say...

either way, sound like you explained yourself and you will be fine. Just keep your garbage out of sight, that is really the best way to avoid anyone getting annoyed.

You really will never know if an inspector happened to pass or someone called.

Now if someone did call....you never know if another neighbor on the block is planning to sell. They may be worried about some prospective buyers coming and seeing the garbage, not truly knowing what is going on or how long it might take or how often garbage is left out, etc. . The neighbors may know they are renovating, but the onlookers will not know the truth. When you are house hunting and you don't know anything, all you can go by is what you see. I know I would want to know what the deal was with a house that had a lot of garbage visible from the street, if I was looking to buy a house on the block, next door, etc. If it looked really messy, it would concern me b/c I don't know what the real deal is.

Sometimes there may be a reason that is valid to someone else, that you don't truly know. Just another perspective from someone who has done renovations and been living on a block where 4 out of 8 houses have done major renovations in 3 years. So I have been on both sides of the fence here and I always felt no one should see my garbage unless it was out for garbage day, heck, I don't even want to see it.

Yes- we are thinking that it might have been the real estate agent who listed the house next door to us. However this house is so disgusting and run down I don't see how some scraps and wood from the renovated house next door would scare anyone away, but its certainly a possiblitly.

I don't know what your house looked like, so I'm not talking about yours, but just on the subject in general. However, if I had a neighbor that had a visual eyesore of crap on their property I would expect them to clean it up. (within a reasonable time)
We all spend an awful lot of money to live anywhere here on Long Island. No one wants to look at unneccesary clutter and debris.
Sorry if I sound like the neighborhood scrooge.

Re: We got a nastygram!

If this is Islip Town, let me tell you, they have one h*ll of a nerve. I have been trying for 15 years to have them come clean the road that is next to my house. It leads to a catch basin and is so overrun that you, literally, cannot drive on it. I, finally, managed to speak to a supervisor who just happened to be parked next to my house talking on his phone. He said "he'll get to it". I won't hold my breath. Let's not even get into the catch basin itself, which has not been touched by a town employee in the 29 years I am living here. So, before this town, or any other, starts annoying residents, it should take a long hard look at the property it owns and make sure it's as it should be.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wow, house is for sale? I was just taking a guess from personal experience.

That is it for sure. Although the way you describe it, sounds like the house itself has issues of needing work. However, anyone coming to look at that will know it needs work and know THEY can fix it. They would not know what the deal is with yours though.
