ovulation
ok once the egg is released it really only hangs out for 12 hours or is it longer?

Yup, its about only 12 hours, that's why its important to BD before ovulation to have sperm waiting for that egg.

They say every other day because sperm lasts longer than an egg...sperm can live in your system for a few days, so if you BD every other day it's likely that there will be sperm there when an egg is released.

My Dr. told me it can live between 24-28 hours.
