I don't get this....

So, I go to my GYN yesterday for my annual pap and to discuss prenatal stuff. I tell her my concerns, that I'm 36 and afraid I will have issues getting pregnant.

I tell her I'm using the FAM (she didn't know what that was)!!, that I use the fertility monitor, preseed, take prenatals and evening primrose oil.

She's like, you don't need to do all that, just have intercourse around day 14 or so. She also told me to "relax".

Also, she said there's no such thing as an anovulatory cycle -- if you have your period, that means you ovulated.

IS IT JUST ME??????????

No, I don't think it's you at all. How long have you been seeing this dr? It doesn't sound like she's given you good professional advice by advising you to bd around day 14 and stated since you got AF that means you O??? Chat Icon

I would consider seeing another dr.

Re: I don't get this....

My doctor also told me to just have relations on days 12, 14 & 16 and never said anything about temping, opk's tracking my cycles with fertility friend, preseed or fertility monitors etc.. The only thing he gave me was a prescription and some samples for Prenate Elite and told me to take that everyday.

I almost get the impression he wouldn't recommend doing these other things, as it then gets you too uptight and stressed about the process. If you have been TTC for over a year, then that's another story. He then said we will meet again a year from now and take it from there.

Not sure about the ovulating thing? I would think too that if you get your period then you are ovulating but don't know for sure?

Have you been TTC'ing for more than a year?

I do agee the whole process is confusing? Chat Icon

Good luck!!Chat Icon

That's crazy! I would change MD's if you're not comfortable with her advice..

Re: I don't get this....

Due to your age, I would think that if you expressed concern a good ob/gyn would at least run some blood tests on you...usually day 3 tests to see how your egg quality is, etc. I find it really odd that you were just brushed off like that. Hate to say it but I'd switch or at least demand that they run tests. How long have you been trying?

And by the way it IS possible to have AF without ovulating, you are right.

She didn't seem concerned at all and that really bothered me.....but AT LEAST, she gave me the number of a fertility specialist and I'm going to make an appointment with them. At least, they'll know what they're doing!!!!

Well good luck, glad you are being proactive and if it turns out there is nothing wrong/no areas where you need help then you are all set! I see an RE as well...my ob/gyn seems great for regular stuff and pregnancy but not for fertility which I think is the case for a lot of them. Keep us posted!

Re: I don't get this....

It sounds like you might have a very old school doctor - is he/she older?
When I went to my ob/gyn after having no period for over 60 days, they tried to tell me it was normal and blew me off. Even after I told them I was irregular before going on the pill I decided to find another doctor.
I went to the first dr. in April and haven't had a period on my own yet. Yeah, thats normal. I went to the new dr. who right away tested me for PCOS and guess what - thats why I didn't get a period.
BOttom line - go with your gut. If this dr. doesn't seem to fit your expectations then find a new one!
