yeah, moldings and wall details are lovely

but they are a B!TCH to paint! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

painting has become a project in and of itself. I am exhausted.

the walls are pretty much done except for touch ups, but the fireplace and most of the moldings still need to be painted and then gone over for any missed spots.

I can really see why hiring someone to do it looks so appealing!

I feel your pain.....it took us HOURS to tape around the crown moldings, chair rail moldings, the fireplace, etc. it was the worst!!!!

Re: yeah, moldings and wall details are lovely

We had our baseboard mouldings done and then had the floors refinished. I cannot even tell you what a PITA that was to touch up. We are redoing our bedrooms and I'm painting everything before it goes up - only bc I'll probably never be able to do it again in that order. I hate that the painter's tape sometimes doesn't do the trick and you get seepage underneath. Then you touch up the wall...get wall paint on the moulding...then you touch up the moulding....get more moulding paint on the wall...and on and on. But they do look awesome when done. I'd love to see pics

Rob is not putting our crowns or kicks up until all the painting is done on the walls.

The chair moldings are fat so they were easy enough for him to avoid.. but I think he would flip out if he had to cut in around crown molding!

Re: yeah, moldings and wall details are lovely

Ah, and that's why I paint them first Chat Icon My brother supervises a contracting business and taught me this trick. Obviously it's too late for this room but I assume you have the same type of mouldings throughout your house.

It's far easier to slap that paint brush around on the mouldings, making sure to get every crevice, nook and cranny without worrying about the walls.

Once the mouldings are done, put plastic / tarp on the base moulding (for wall paint drips) and paint the walls. Use an angled 1-1.5" brush for the 'seams' (between the wall and the mouldings).

Voila! No taping time and no hours on end painting the moulding. You may need to do minute touch ups but I promise, you will never go back to painting the walls first. It's not only faster, my rooms honestly look professionally painted now (definitely NOT the case before).

ETA: you need a steady hand for when using the wall brush close to the mouldings. I handle that part while DH uses the rollers on the majority of the walls. Whoever has the steadier hand should probably do that part.
