Question for those with more then 1 kitty

If you have more then one cat in your household, do you have one litter box for each? DH and I keep considering getting a kitten for out cat. Flipper is an indoor cat and we feel bad sometimes that she is all by herself all day and when we go away (although SIL comes over to feed her and hang out for a little when we're away.)
We also are afraid that our sweet, wonderful kitty might be ruined by having to share us, but I mostly just believe it will make her happier.

But, the bigger problem is there just is no where to put another litter box , so I'm wondering how important it is to have another one, or if they can deal with sharing.

TIA!

I have 4 cats and only have one litter box. I clean it twice a day and change the litter about every other week. No problems at all.

Re: Question for those with more then 1 kitty

we had some litter box issues last month and consulted with the vet and they say the rule of thumb is 1 each plus 1 so you would need 3. I personally think that is ridiculous. Our 2 cats are 2 1/2 and always only had one and we had no issues. We added another last month down the basement and they have still never used it. Turned out the issues were due to one of them being a little sick (ate some houseplants). I think 1 is fine but if your current cat gets a little terrorial you may have to add another.

BTW - I think it is great that you're getting your cat a friend. Our two are best buds.

Re: Question for those with more then 1 kitty

We have two cats. When we got out 2nd cat last year, we kept 2 separate litter boxes. But for some reason they both preferred one box over the other (same kind of box, jus different color). Weird.

Anyway, after several months of keeping 2 litter boxes and only having to clean one daily, we went back to only one litter box for 2 cats.

We clean the litter box daily, and it has never been a problem. As long as you clean the litter box frequently and replace all the litter regularly, then you shouldn't have a problem with just one box.

I have two cats, and one litter box. We scoop it 2x daily, and throw out the litter weekly.

It depends on the cats.

I have two cats and I have two litter boxes.

Thanks! Yeah, I was going by what the experts say that you should have one for each at least, and there's just no good place to put a second one. Good to know they could probably get by with one.

We're still conflicted, but saw a bunch of kittens at Petco yesterday and were so close to adopting one.Chat Icon

We have 2 cats and they have always used the same litter box. Even when we first had two... they would only share one. So that is what we do and we just scoop it twice a day.

We got a kitten for crokey-

for the first week or 2- they had there own litter boxes- then I got fed up with her making a mess- and decided she could share

it's been fine- they share every thing - food, water everything

Re: Question for those with more then 1 kitty

1 box, 2 cats......I have the automatic littermaid one, so thankfully we ony have to tend to the litter box every 3rd day. We change out the litter maybe every 10 days.

As for them getting along........Ashes HATED Nitro for several weeks. He hated DH & I too. It was REALLY bad.....but after 2 or 3 weeks, they finally rumbled, kicked each others butts & became friends!!

They are so cute together.....they roughhouse, but never hurt each other!! Plus they are indoor cats in an apartment, so the running they do chasing each other is good exercise!

I have two cats and one litter box, when we moved we got a 2nd box but they always use the same one, so now we are back to one.

DH scoops twice a day, it never smells and isn't a problem.
