Okay, where is my city folk???????

I was a Manhattanite (born and bred) for almost 29 years!!!!!! I loved experiencing Manhattan!!!!! I grew up in an a great beautiful family oriented EXTREMELY affordable neighborhood which, unfortunately, is anything but now, (well still quite beautiful, but now EXTREMELY expensive...........)

We are currently in Downtown Brooklyn and I love it as well;very nice and family frendly!!!!

I love it here but have such yearnings for a house as I haven't experienced it but, want my kids too!!!!

Also, as much as I love it here you def can get more bang for the buck (considering maintenence, overalll space, mortgage.....)

This is the debate I have in my head all the time.

Also my DH is currently secure in a job in Brooklyn, my job requires travel but for the most part is conducive to Brooklyn.. Being from Manhattan I am spoiled when it comes to commuting.......

I guess what I am asking is, can anyone guide us as where to live?????Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Or at least get all the crazy thoughts out of my head??

Or has anyone experienced similar??????

TIA!!!!!

Re: Okay, where is my city folk???????

I live in Queens - In Hollis hills. Its a beautiful little area south of bayside.

I love it here because it is very residential, but we are right off the LIE, GC, CIP, And Clearview so we are minutes from the the throgs neck, minutes from the airports, 15 min from the city (Without traffic of course) 15 min from the westbury shopping area,40 min to the beach - and hour or so to skiing, etc....

My hubbie works in Brooklyn - the commute is really easy he doesn't mind it at all.

I used to work on LI and my commute was pretty easy too.

It's so centrally located it's easy to get anywhere - if you want more info FM me :)

What about Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights? Houses are not cheap ($600-700Ks), but the area is very neighborhoodly. I grew up there and it is a great area.

What is your definition of "affordable?" Do you want a single family house, or a condo/co-op?

Re: Okay, where is my city folk???????

what about Douglaston or Great Neck. Right on the Queens border. Well Douglaston is Queens and Great Neck is Nassau, but it's right on the borderline. I don't know about the prices of houses, but it's a nice area and still close to all. GL!Chat Icon

We are pretty open to a condo/co-op but, at this point in our lives, prefer a house. We have been in our apt together five years now. DH grew up in one and I have never experienced it.

queens homes are very pricey, but you should consider the mortgage cost with the MUCH lower taxes and compare that to a home on LI- it may not be much of a difference. Maybe try new hyde park, which is on the border of LI and queens.

That isn't exactly true since NYC residents pay income tax, when you combine the lower property tax with the income tax, it is essentially the same.

To buy a house in any of the five buroughs is going to be very expensive - especially Queens/Brooklyn - I would say at least $600K... if you truly want to live in a house with a yard, etc, you should consider moving to Nassau county. Nassau is very expensive, but not as much as Queens. If you want to go even lowe home pricesr and have lower taxes, then you need to go to suffolk.

Yes, Nassau is a huge consideration for us as well.

Re: Okay, where is my city folk???????

Well, I lived in Manhattan for 10 years and Brooklyn for 5. When DH and I were getting married, I moved into his apartment in Great Neck because it was larger than mine, and he owned it.
But I told him that I wanted to move back to the city when we started looking for a larger place.

So, 2 years later, we live in Port Washington! I realized there were many things I like about the suburbs, and I really didn't want to go back to the city, but that was my experience. I did want to live in a town with a downtown and some things I could walk to, but we did manage to find that.

Bay Ridge in Brooklyn is great, but homes there go for around $800-900, or they did a couple years ago. Same for Douglaston and Little Neck. Great Neck is beautiful, and you can find some things in that price range or a bit lower, but they will be very small and need a lot of work.

New Hyde Park is not a bad commute at all, even to Brooklyn. Same with Floral Park and Garden City.

Re: Okay, where is my city folk???????

I live in downton Brooklyn.

I can pretty much guarantee you that I will NEVER buy a house in the city, and that (especially after reading that RE tax thread) will NEVER buy a house on LI.

I LOVE my apt. I LOVE where I live. I did nowever, grow up in a big brownstone with a large backyard and pool in Park Slope (when homes still came with some kind of hard space)

I have 2 friends that purchased houses in Queens. neither of them have any type of a backyard. there is no effing way I am paying $600,000 and I can't even bbq. it's not happening.

but I am also not going to move to a place where the Taxes cost almost as much as my mortgage. that is not happening either.

so I will be a city dweller. a renter b/c my rent is VERY cheap.

we may buy a weekend/vacation home upstate. that will cool my heels on the whole pool/bbq thing.

of course this is just my perspective. some people are fine with these things b/c they want a house. I don't need it.

i thought they changed is where you still have to pay the income tax if you work in the city, so it wouldn't change if you continue to work in the city but move to LI.
And anyway, the income tax is pennies compared to the difference in taxes between some LI and Queens homes. I think my nyc income tax last year was less than $2k.

We currently live in Carroll Gardens. DH works in Park Slope and I work in Manhattan. We want our (future) kids to grow up in an environment similar to what we had, so we will eventually move to the burbs.

We are looking in south shore Nassau County, on the Babylon train line. Our top pick has express trains, I could be in the city in 45 mins, door to door is 1 hour. My husband will not have as easy of a commute (by car). We are willing to live with that in order to have a home with no upstairs or downstairs neighbors, a driveway, a backyard, trees, grass and quiet. Buying in the city was not an option for us because we are not rich and could never afford to buy a place that would be acceptable to us.

Oh, it looks like we're neighbors.Chat Icon
How do you like Carroll Gardens? We have been in Cobble for 5 years and like it very much.Chat Icon

We are in Brooklyn too - Clinton Hill. You will not find a traditional house with a decent yard in Brooklyn for $600K.

Some BK houses - not my listings just a site I check often

If you truly want a house with a yard, trees, no upstairs neighbors and all that goes with apartment living, I suggest Nassau.
