Leona Helmsley leaves $12M to her dog and ZERO to grandkids

So I just LOL'd at work, listening to the news. The old "queen of mean's" will has been revealed and she left a good chunk of her $4 billion dollar fortune to charities, and made sure to leave $12 million to her Maltese named "Trouble"

she did leave money to TWO out of the FOUR grandkids she had--but said she left out the other two for "reasons that are known to them" (btw--the other 2 who got money MUST visit their father's grave at least once every year to keep their $5M)

she left $100K for her limo driver and $3M for the "upkeep" of her masoleum that must be steam-cleaned every year. (where her dog will eventually be buried with her)

talk about the ultimate jip for the 2 naughty grandkids.

And this is why I hate wills and testaments....It just allows people to hurt and control their "loved ones" after they are gone!

I sure hope she earns her way into heaven cause she didnt do it while on Earth!

I can think of many people who are completely and totally undeserving of what they think should be left to them.

I have also seen families torn up and destroyed for contesting wills and trying to split up an estate. I bet this is an air-tight deal.

Her elevator never went all the way to the top floor. Having said that she was also known as the Queen of Mean.

IMO-she was never medicated enough.

OMG how pizzed would you be if your grandma left $12m to her freaking dog! Meegan Panzirer went to my high school...she was a really nice girl. Poor thing.

I used to work for Helmsley-Spear... I remember when she fired her grandson (he was planning to quit anyway) and I'm pretty sure he's one of the 2 left out of the will. She fired his secretary (the day she came back from maternity leave) for asking who was calling.

She was a mean, crazy old b*tch but left me some good stories to tell.

....She also left millions for her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, who was named to care for Trouble in her absence, as well as two of four grandchildren from her late son Jay Panzirer - so long as they visit their father's grave site once each calendar year....

My guess is that the $12M trust is going to be contested. While pet trusts are allowed and enforceable in NY, the court can reduce the trust amount if it the amount funding the trust is considered unreasonable. Those funds would then pass as unexpended trust property as directed in the trust documents.

It's likely that whoever this money could pass to is the one who'll be complaining about it. This is why a lot of attorneys who set up pet trusts recommend selecting an animal charity as the remainderman for a pet trust, since they're usually more sympathetic to generous provisions for animals than a family member might be.
