Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
I am trying to figure out my options?
I don't think a company is in our budget.
Renting a truck?
We only have 1 bed, 2 dressers, futon, love seat, kitchen table set (breaks apart) Tons of boxes
Our flat screen TV and really fragiles will go in our car.
What size truck do you think we would need?
Do you have a moving company that you can recommend, just to see the cost.
TIA!!!!!

Re: Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
We moved from LI to Chicago in May 06. We used Charles Wood. Charles Wood website I can't remember how much it was. We moved from a 1 bedroom apartment and had some furniture from DH's parents (like a dining room set). I think it was approx. $3000. DH's company reimbursed us since we moved for his job. I was happy with them. The woman I dealt with, Andrea, was great.

Re: Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
We moved from LI to Pittsburgh about 2 weeks ago. We looked in companies, but they all have a minumum for longer moves, and its a lot. The cheapest quote we got was clost to 3k.
We decided to rent a truck. We got a 10 ft truck from Budget rental and it was tight. We had 2 full beds (no headboards, just matresses), 1 chest of drawers style dresser, a table and 6 chairs and a desk that broke apart in to 3 flat pieces. And boxes and boxes and boxes of stuff. You tend to under estimate the amount of stuff you own. I would NOT reccomened the smallest truck, probably a 16 ft truck would work well for you.
Good Luck! Moving yourself is not a lot of fun, but it saved us close to 2500 dollars.

we rented a budget truck...DH put all his stuff from his apt and my big things in it...drove it down (he left his truck there from a prior trip) then he flew back up and drove down with me and the dogs

Re: Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
we recently moved from LI to NJ and we used Astro (part of Allied)----we had a large fully furnished 2 BR apt w/finished basement and a ton of stuff-----we debated doing it ourselves, if we had had less stuff we definetly could have with alot of help from friends/family. i would call around---i had the guys actually come out to give a quote---they get a better idea of how much you have and i ended up paying exactly what my quote was. as far as renting your own truck---when i moved to LI i used uhaul, the 14' truck just for my stuff and I didn't have a lot of furniture yet

Re: Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
We're moving form NY to GA at the end of the month. The cheapest and easiest way is just to rent a Uhual (they have the best prices in my experience) and load it all up yourself. The price depends on the distance, but for example, from NY to GA (thats 2000 miles away) with a 17' truck its costing us about $1000. BUT if you dont have much furniture you can get the smaller truck which is much cheaper.
Good Luck

Re: Moving out-of-state (who/what did you use?)
We used a POD. It was great. Just about $900 and we didn't have to drive the thing!!! It was fantastic! Plus we didn't have that "Rush Rush, get the truck back by 6PM" We called when we were done..
