Vegetarians?

I'm about a year away from ttc, but I thought I would ask this now because I have a lot of thinking to do.

I'm a vegetarian and haven't eaten meat in 8 years. I'm not a vegan - I eat yogurt, cheese, and eggs. Right now I'm pretty healthy: my cholesterol and blood pressure and weight are all very good. But I'm worried about not eating meat when I'm ttc because I'm a little worried about not having the right nutrients in my system when I finally do get pg. It makes sense to think that in the first few weeks / month after conception are crucial and that I should have the right vitamins and proteins in my system... right? I'm not entirely convinced that vitamins can make up for everything I'm missing.

Are any of you vegetarians or have veggie friends? Any advice? Thanks.

Re: Vegetarians?

I am a vegetarian. I think if you are knowledgable about what youa re putting into your body-- you are ok. With balanced meals, and ensuring you are getting protein and veggies, you are still eating healthy.

I did a search, and there are a couple of pregnant veggie books out there, which I will invest in when the time comes... Also, do a search on here, there have been similar threads.

I am vegetarian. One of my good friends just had a healthy 10 lb. baby and she is very strict vegetarian. It's not a problem. Your prenatal vitamins will provide lots of the nutrients and vitamins you need during pg.

I'm a vegetarian and while DH would like me to eat meat when I'm pg, I can't guarantee it. So, vitamins, lots of beans, tofu, veggies and fruits, yogurt, milk and cheese will hopefully be in my diet.

Re: Vegetarians?

I'm a pesce-vegetarian (I eat fish)...I spoke with my Dr about this and he didn't have any concerns...as long as I was taking supplements and eating a healthy, balanced diet.

It is indeed OK. I also took spirutien shakes if I felt I was not getting enough protein.

Re: Vegetarians?

At your next visit ask your OBGYN about it. I don't eat much meat (only poultry and seafood) and I never had a problem. If you've been a vegitarian for 8 years then I'll bet you kow exactly where to get nutrients from to make up for not eating meat. Just don't forget to take your prenatals!

Re: Vegetarians?

i am a fagazee vegetarian....meaning i eat like a few bites of meat here or there. i really like to eat all veggies and rices and stuff like that. but i have to say when i got pg with my ds, that went right out the window and i started eating veal (something i swore i would never eat) and pork and lots of beef. it was weird because my body was convincing me i had to have it! i craved it! now im back to being a fagazee.....Chat Icon
