SO MAD RIGHT NOW
Ok so I normal post on LIWeddings but now that I married with a baby, I guess its time for me to graduate So here's my first post. Sorry its a rant but I am SO MAD!!!
Ok so my FIL is in Cardiac Intensive Care. He is awaiting a heart transplant as the heart attack he suffered this past Wednesday did such severe damage that he will not survive without a new heart. He was transported to New England Medical Center yesterday, which is in Boston, 70 miles from our home in Rhode Island.
SOOOOOOOO I go to Human Resources today & I say "listen - here's the deal." I explain that MIL picks our baby up from daycare every day but under the circumstances that she cannot. She will be here in Boston with her husband obviously.
So I say “I will skip lunch every day if I can leave an hour early so I can pick up my daughter from daycare.” (Daycare closes at 5:30 and I work in Boston, an hour & a half from home)
SHE SAID NO. She gave me some BS that if they let me leave early that EVERYONE will want to leave early. Um, my FIL is in INTENSIVE CARE!!!!
IS SHE KIDDING ME?????

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
yeah, that's pretty ourageous..... I guess you can't now ask permission of your supervisor, and bypass the HR freak... since you already spoke to her.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
The same thing happened to me years ago when my father was dying. I asked for a modified schedule and appropriate salary adjustment for the 2 maybe 3 weeks he had to live so I could help my mother at home (that's where he died) and was denied. I never forgave my boss at the time for that.
I am sorry about your FIL and hope a suitable donor is found asap.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
Aren't there rules against that? I mean it's an immediate family member (even if he's your IL) and it's not like you're saying you want time off- you're asking to work modified hours. That's terrible of them. I would go and speak to someone else about it.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
Wow, that's pretty low.
This is an extreme circumstance and you are willing to exchange your lunch for the early departure.
You should try to either talk to your direct supervisor or her superior.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
maybe rephrase it as 'emergency leave', and suck up the pay cut for those hours?

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with that on top of everything else! I cannot believe in the state of the world today companies aren't more understanding of family needs. I would try and talk to someone over her head. I'm po'd with you!

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
This is a familiar situation. About five years ago, my dad was very sick with a heart problem and hospitalized for a while. I wanted to skip lunch and leave work an hour early also. My boss said NO. His boss said NO. HR said NO.
The following day I worked and skipped lunch. I got up at 4:00 and left work. I didn't even explain myself. I was told the following day if I did it again I would be fired. Once again, I left at 4:00. I was warned day after day and I continued to leave. I told them "Fire me ... just fire me."
The boss, the company, HR ... no one had the audicity to do a single thing. My family was more important. I simply didn't care what they said. I was hoping they would fire me. I would have contacted the local news, etc and made such a major deal out of this they would have regretted their actions.
I had a good management job and I worked for a very important company. I continued working there for a long time afterwards with no ramifications from anyone. Life goes on .....
Hope things work out for you! They are being VERY unfair!

Funny, that is what I have been doing! They haven't said anything yet. My boss is actually on vacation right now so he has no knowledge of the issue. I'll take it up with him upon his return. He's the President & CEO. Hopefully he'll say yes & then HR can kiss my a$$.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
Do you have FMLA? That they cannot deny you and I believe it can be used for a parent.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
I would go above her head! That's outrageous. It's not like you want special privelages for good you have a family crisis for god sake. Is there a possibility of some kind of paid leave? I hope all works out.

Re: SO MAD RIGHT NOW
FMLA is unpaid but you can take it in partial days.
Can you use vacation and/or personal time to make the 80 hours?
Is there another HR person you can speak to? They should be able to be a little flexible.
Are you exempt? Good work performance? Call your boss and make arrangements directly with him/her. Then talk to HR together. With your bosses support, you should be able to do it. I know I would.
Good Luck!
