Ladies, I was just looking into buying Robitussin to increase my CM this month. I read that there is some ingredient in some of the Robitussins that causes birth defects, Dextromethorphan. It seems to be true, I found several articles citing research studies indicating this. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew this and only got the Robitussin that does not have it (there are so many varieties, it is confusing). I am going to get the Robitussin Chest Congestion Guaifenesin Syrup, USP. This only has Gauifenesin, which is what we want to thin mucus, and not the Dextromethorphan.
I don't know if this is old news, but I never heard of it before. Here is the article I read about it.

I believe you are right, but I was just surprised that an ingredient in robitussin is proven to cause birth defects and I was almost going to buy the kind with it in it, not knowing. I just thought you ladies would like to know, and there is an option to have the kind without. I'd rather not take the chance.

When using Robitussin or Mucinex, you want to be sure that the ONLY ingredient listed on the package is guaifenesen.

It won't affect the baby. The baby doesn't share anything with you til the second trimester, so something you took before you were pregnant and leaves your system won't hurt the baby.

no no no no no!!!!
Don't take ANYTHING that is not preggo- approved. Ask your obstetrician / Gyno before taking even the most seemingly innocent things, such as vitamins or analgesics.
Technically, the zygote/fetus never shares blood with the mother... becuase the mother's immune system would reject the 'foreign body'. However, only a semi-permeable barrier seperates the mom's and childs blood in the placenta.... through that barrier, all nutrients pass to the child, and all waste passes to the mom. Almost all drugs are able to pass that barrier.
I should add that this applies for times even prior to conception, becuase many of these drugs linger in low levels in the body for quite a while... too low to be medically helpful, but high enough to create developmental problems...
Since the placenta develops almost immediately following implantation, because humans have very small yolk sacs in their eggs, a woman TTC should never, ever take anything which may be harmful... and she must be super vigilant during the first trimester... since that is the most delicate time, when most organs develop and grow.

thanks.... I'm a drug abuse researcher... and a former embryology teaching assistant... so I feel compelled to provide a bit of background when anything concerning drugs / metabolism/ health is concerned... I want to make sure everyone makes an informed decision
