Vanity and Sink or Pedestal Sink?

Hey we have a dilemma. I really love the look of a pedestal sink but I dont like the fact that there is no place to put any of our stuff. We do not have a closet in the bathroom but we could always put a cabinet in there if need be.....I know the pedestal sink would make the bathroom look a lot bigger and that is something that we need.

Now would you do a small vanity, with a sink top or would you do a pedestal sink? I already bought a new medicine cabinet that is all mirror, and tehe tub is a bone color, so what ever we chose has to be a bone color.

People are telling me to replace the toilet too. It is in good shape, but they since you have to remove it to tile the floor, you may as well replace it with a new one.

We need to buy bone colored replacements, right? Since the tub is a bone color....

What would you do?

Hi Scott.

First thing you need to remember is that to make sure all of your replacements are from the same manufacturer as the tub because the colors vary between different manufacturers. That means that Bone for American Standard and Kohler can be very different and can stand out.

As for the pedestal vs. vanity - I would do the vanity, you need the storage area much more than the space. Your bathroom is functional (you only have one right?), you really need to maximize the space or I think you'll regret it. Maybe down the road if you ever expand you can replace it with a pedestal, but I wouldn't do it now. Think about it, right now it's just you and your DW, and how much stuff for the bathroom you have -- think about when you have kids and how much will be added.

I would go with the vanity, especially since you need the storage. We have a small bathroom and we went with the vanity as well. We also got bone colored. However, the vanity we bought only came in white so we painted it off white and it looks pretty good.

I'd do vanity and absolutely replace the toilet. We didn't at first and I ended up having FH change it when we were done with the bathroom bacuase it looked old next to the new fixtures.

We have a pedestal sink in our small master bathroom and I love it. I think a vanity would have taken up so much more room, even the smallest of sizes. We ended up putting in a medicine cabinet that is recessed into the wall, along with a few nice shelves over the toilet. That way we have storage and can put some always used items on the shelf.

That is good to know, thanks!

I would do the vanity and sink- I also love the look of a pedestal sink, but it's just not practical for the main bathroom, unless you are able to put in more storage. We are going to put a pedestal in our half bath, but we don't use that room for getting ready in the morning and don't need the storage.

I would go with the pedestal sink and the vanity. Since you are ripping everything up anyway, I would replace the toliet as well. I know with every pedestal sink there's a matching toliet - we did that for our downstairs bathroom. Though it's a bad picture, here's what ours looks like.

If it is your primary bathroom I'd install a vanity as storage is most important in a primary bathroom. Pedestal sinks are usually more practical for 1/2 baths for first floors/basements (not near bedrooms) that are primarily used for "quick trips" and therefore not the need to store hairdryers, cleaning supplies, bottles of lotion, etc. If it's the bathroom that anyone will be using to get ready in the morning then vanity is the way to go.

I would do the pedestal sink and with a pretty free standing (long thin rectangular) cabinet or if your bathroom isn't too big have something mount on the wall.
Just don't like the cabinet sink combo, it always look so bulky, and I've never seen one I like.

Re: Vanity and Sink or Pedestal Sink?

Well we decided to go with the vanity....Since the bathroom is so small, and the pedestal will take up as much or a little less than the space the vanity will take...Danielle would rather have the storage...so thats that
