If you're happy where you live and are comfortable living there, why let other people's comments bother you?
This LI/OOS "thing" has been going on for years. If you know that you'd never live OOS - just be content with what you have and not take their comments so personally.
I 100% agree. Everyone needs to grow up. Who gives a flying $hit what people say about LI. I'm sorry I usually hold my tongue but there are bigger and much more important things to be passionate about. Put your energy into that
i'll put my energy towards whatever I feel like. I just thought an OOS board would be beneficial. I care about what people say about where I live, if you dont thats your perrogative.

I also thing that would be an excellent idea!
I was one of the ones who posted in response to the mortgage question. I guess I just really don't understand what the big deal is. True, DH and I COULD have stayed on LI, but we feel that the two of us work two damn hard to spend every last penny we have on a house that's anything less than stellar. Not saying that makes our house better than anyone else's (here in NC, or on LI), but it's what WE felt was right for us.
I don't think people are stupid for staying on LI. It was a really tough thing for us to leave. We both grew up there, and would have probably stayed if we felt that it would meet our future needs and fit into our lives as far as what goals we are looking to achieve.
Do I get upset when other people say "Sure, all I can afford on LI is a shack, but I'd NEVER move out of state in a million years"? No way. That's your prerogative, and your decision. So why get upset when OOS residents comment to the opposite effect? Seems to me if you're getting upset, you just don't like to see that others are getting more for their money elsewhere.
ETA: I looked back at my other post and noticed that I used a , so I guess the original post was directed at me. I wasn't rolling my eyes in an attempt to act "holier than thou". It was more out of exasperation that LI was a place that we couldn't afford, even if we had wanted to.

Re: We should have an Out of State board...
I don't think we need an OOS board because I like to see pics of homes from all over especially when it comes to decorating & stuff. I think when a poster(who may or may not realize how many OOS'ers are a big part of LIF) do a poll about cost of living, the OOS'ers should either not participate OR specifically state in a post not in the poll what their answer is. The polls will always be screwed up though when people are trying to gauge today's cost of living because we have people here that bought modest homes on LI ten plus years ago & their mortgages are a fraction of those that bought recently. Its unfortunate but polling about money issues here is pretty useless.
The "my state is better than yours" comments are always going to be as heated as LI school district posts. For some reason, no matter how long we all "know" eachother these topics still bring out the worst in people.

I think an OOS board would be nice. People are always asking advice on moving OOS and it would give a place for that information to rest so you could find it easily.
I also think that having a Home Buying Board and a Home Owners Board would serve a similar purpose.

Re: We should have an Out of State board...
I think an OOS board would be great. It's almost like a career board. Those that need help or suggestions on certain careers refer to that board. The recipe board, parenting, etc....I have gone on the parenting board so many times and have saved so many threads in my notebook just because some of the advice there is amazing and when I have kids I have those threads to refer too. An OOS board would be great for those that are out of state and those that are interested have a board to go to for help.
As for mortgages and why would anyone live in that area, heck if you are fortunate enough to own a home no matter where it is, congrats to you.

Well, they could get rid of one of the boards that isn't used, like the Story Writing Board (not the one for books you read, the other one) and replace it with an OOS board. It could be a trial and if it isn't popular then it gets elimanated.

But, to make an OOS board so that we don't post on Home our houses or thoughts, or reasons for moving? No, that's not fair.

The things that bother people on this board is unreal. Why segregate based on region? That is absurd.

ITA. There is no membership requirement that you have to read all threads.
Quite frankly, I do think NYC/LI has overpriced real estate but I still live here and we will probably always keep our NYC apartment even when we move OOS. Everyone has their reasons for staying in NYC/LI and on the other side of the spectrum everyone has their reasons for wanting to move OOS. I think it's helpful to see both sides.
I must admit though that the price of real estate in NYC always makes me curious about who is buying these places and where do they work in order to pay some of these outrageous mortgages? There are some new condos in downtown Brooklyn that are pretty high. A 705 sq ft 1 bedroom is $619K http://www.onehanson.com/availability/unit_detail.cfm?c=5&unit=22C

Re: We should have an Out of State board...
i think an out of state board would be nice to have, however on the other hand when people show pictures of their homes and they are on the fairly large side, ppl tend to make comments like beautiful home, not on LI right? so i think the comments go both ways
