Girls, is this weird or am I overeacting?

Okay, I went off the pill last month and went to my Doctor last Friday to let her know and that we are going to start TTC.

I thought she would prescribe prenatals, but she didn't. She just told me to take a multivitamin with Folic Acid.

I have been and I tell her that and she said good. That's it.

Shouldn't I be taking prenatal vitamins?

I am new to all of this and have alot to learn, so forgive me if I am overeacting.

Well i suppose each doctor is different, but i had my appointment today and told the doctor that i was off the pill and we'd start trying in a few months. So he gave me prenatal vitamins to take because they like to start you on them before you're pregnant.

I would just call your doctor back if you feel that strongly about it and ask for a prescription for them. Chat Icon

My doctor said the same thing to me- to just take a regular multivitamin with 400 mcg of folic acid. I asked why he didn't recommend a prenatal vitamin, and he said 400 mcg is all I need. He said he will prescribe a prenatal after we got a BFP. So, I've been taking what he recommended. However, since we've gotten serious about TTC this month, I started taking an over the counter prenatal with 800 mcg's.

My doctor said that as long as you are taking the right amount of Folic Acid, mv's are ok...

My OB/GYN told me that the over the counter prenatals were fine for TTC.

I take multivitamins with an extra pill of folic acid.
If you really want prenatals you can buy the over the counter ones. They have the same content as the prescription ones and they are cheaper.

I didn't take prenatals before I got pregnant. And I didn't take them that often when I was pregnant either since they made me so ill.

My old OB said the same. She did not prescribe pre-natals while TTC. A multivitamin w/ folic acid is fine, or just pick up an OTC pre-natal.Chat Icon

I was just told to take the 400 of folic acid. Many people don't think about how long it might take to get pregnant, so it could be a long time on pre-natals. Folic Acid is the major thing you need.

Okay, so I am not the only one. I feel better, I am and have been taking a vitamin with 400 mcg.

A couple of my friends who I talked to about this were concerned.

I am still kinda concerned thought, I am thinking of looking into another Doctor.

My doctor (both MD and GYN) said the exact same thing. "You are taking multi and folic.. Okay good".... So I am not too worried.

My gyno did the same thing. If you're uncomfortable, switch to prenatals (Target sells their own brand). You get folic acid from food in addition to what's in the vitamin so chances are you're covered.

Re: Girls, is this weird or am I overeacting?

My doctor told me to just get an over the counter prenatal (I got Target) and until I got my BFP I wouldn't need prescription prenatals.

I agree-This is what I would do-you should be on 800. FA is metabolized well by your body. You will excrete any additional that you don't need

I would switch MDs just b/c they didn't prescribe a prenatal while TTC. If you have other issues and reservations and/or problems, then by all means find a new MD - but don't do it over vitamins.

My OB/GYN has been in practice for 40 years and he told me to take a multi-vitamin with no less than 400 mcg of folic acid and switched me to prenatal when I got BFP.

Re: Girls, is this weird or am I overeacting?

If you like your Doctor overall, and dont want to switch, then I would just call and ask him/her to prescribe a prenatal for you because that is what you want and choose, regardless if what you are taking is "good enough".

They have no reason to refuse that to you. I take Pre-Care Conceive. If there is one you want to try, tell her the brand or leave it up to her.

Usually the Dr. give you samples first, to see how you like them. But in this case, I guess I would have or ask the Dr. to call in a prescription for you so you do not have to go back again.
