I did exactly the same thing. I didn't have a traditional shower so I wasn't sure what, if anything, we would get as gifts and I wanted to be sure we had everything we needed (and lot's of stuff I'm sure we don't! ). I tell DH that retail therapy helped me through the hormonal rollercoaster I was on through my 2nd and most of my 3rd trimester.
