folic acid?
Hey ladies,
Do you know how much folic acid we should be getting? I've heard different things - 400 mcg, 800 mcg. The prenatal I'm taking rigth now says it has 1 mg. I forgot to ask the doctor about this last time I was there.

Everyone is different and I have seen varying responses from 400mcg to 800mcg to 1000mcg (which is the same as 1mg).
My prenatal has 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid in it and it was prescribed to me in that amount for a reason and I am only TTC - not PG yet. I have seen people insist that all a person need is a certain amount. I think asking your doctor to recommend is your best bet. I know my nutritional needs are FAR different from most people on a day to day basis and I simply can't take what everyone else does.

I was just at my annual appt and my GYN gave me a prenatal that has 1mg (1000 mcg). The nurse said I could start it now while TTC but the doc said I can wait until I get a BFP.

I am going to my Dr. next week but my family Dr. prescribed me folic acid and I bought the GNC ones, they have 800mg when I told my dr. he said that was great.

My midwife suggested 800mcg. But just check with your doctor, they may want you on a specific dose.

My gyn gave me an Rx for 800mcg to take during TTC but when I mentioned that I take a women's multi-vitamin (400mcg) she said that was fine. I like to have all bases covered so I actually take both... after giving the CVS guy a giggle when I asked if I can OD on folic acid

The answer also depends on family history -- if there are certain conditions (like spina bifida) you would take a much higher amount.
