Village Inspectors
Does anyone here live in a village? Last night, there was a card for the Patchogue Village inspector in the door jam- it said- PLEASE CALL. It seems he thinks we're doing major interior renovations, and we need a permit. Not only am I concerned that a neighbor called and complained , but has this opened a can of worms here? Is he going to come in and inspect the house and strat ordering upgrades?
I hope not, because it would seem that, in the buying process, it should have been ordered to have the village inspect the property...
Any help is appreciated. Thansk!

Re: Village Inspectors
it could be for reassesment purposes. We had to have our house inspected by the village when we bought it. I think it was more for electrical and fire alarms and such. To make sure everything was safe in that regard.

Re: Village Inspectors
We live in a villag and we did renovations and I am always soo nervouse to get that letter or knock on the door.
The Mayor told everyone to rat out their neighbors if they see them doing any renovations I would never do that. And I would be so mad if someone did that to me.
He def will look around and should know what needed permits and what didn't. At least that it was I was told around here. I will never let them in my house.

I would NEVER let them in my house because once you let them in they will find everything that you need to do or change and it will never end and could potentially increase your taxes.

Re: Village Inspectors
Am I allowed to refuse them entry to the house? Should we simply not call him back? I will be LIVID if there are certain pre existing problems that could have been taken care of by the seller- because I would expect that real estate agencies would know the rules of village homes.

Re: Village Inspectors
It is a tough situation because if you don't call them back they might get mad and make things worse.
Most agents over where I live don't know the rules of the village at all.

Re: Village Inspectors
You can refuse entry, but I beleive you can be given a fine/summons if you do.

UGH! We'll see what happens- apparantly they thought we were putting up walls no idea where that came from. I hope he doesn't want to come snoop around.

Re: Village Inspectors
My aunt refused entry and they sent her a summons to appear in court. This happened recently so she hasn't been to court yet. They think she is renting out her basement, which she isn't. Who knows what the outcome will be!

Re: Village Inspectors
Unfortunately, you can't choose your neighbors!! New neighbors moved next door to my parents in Smithtown and have reported my parents to the Town a few times while they renovated their home this past year!! My parents have lived there for over 20 years and have great relationships with everyone on the block! Maybe the new neighbors should have thought about that considering they put their driveway too close to the porperty line... ugh

This is so true, the people who used to live next door to my parents were awful! They used to yell at me and my brother when we were little kids if we so much as set a toe over the property line. When my parents got an above ground pool, they called the town and complained and made them get all kinds of permits.

Re: Village Inspectors
I never knew any of this about villages. Naunie, I hope it works out and they're not just looking for a handout.
What @sshole neighbors you have though! Can they even see in your house, how could they possibly know if you were putting up walls?
Some people are pitiful, unhappy b@stards who are always looking to make others unhappy.
