Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again

I also think that since taste & quality of content are such subjective terms, and can run such a wide gammet, who would determine this anyway, what is right & what is not..... I think that we have such a diverse society & have so many different levels of taste that to narrowly define "good entertainment" would be nearly impossible. Take for example The Sopranos. I personally cannot watch it, b/c I do not agree with the images portrayed on the show. Do I tell others not to watch it? No, but I personally do not. Meanwhile it is one of the highest rated shows on Cable....so go figure!

I'm a huge supporter of freedom of speech, but what a private company chooses to do is their business. If they were to be arrested, that's a different story.

I will sya that I'm sick of people listening to shows they don't like and then complaining to the advertisers about it. Get a life and listen to what you like!

Don't be offended because other people are offended, and then jump on the bandwagon!

With a 0.0 rating, how many people could really be offended? Chat Icon

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again

I heard it again and again on 1010 WINS this morning. The report said that they were NOT going to get fired, nor should they IMO, for something someone else said. Especially since it's on XM or whatever station that is. It's not on the public airwaves!!!

And as usual, this is being blown somewhat out of proportion. The guy did not specifically say he wanted to rape her...yes, he was vulgar about it, but that wasn't what he said. That's what the media is saying.

Precisely...the newsmedia is again blowing it out of proportion....how come no one is shaking their fist & demanding that they get fined or fired for spreading what was originally broadcast on a paid medium?!

And that's the whole point. These guys have their core audience and the advertisers pay for that particular audience.
Why should they be removed from the airwaves for doing their job?

Oh and BTW, they are on public radio until 9 a.m. then they go over to XM

the homeless guy did not use the term "rape" - HOWEVER, O&A did say something to the effect of "while you're holding her down" - implying the act of rape. they then go on to LAUGH about it, and envision the "horror" on her face!!Chat Icon this is digusting, and the reason why i would never listen to them, or anyone like them.

do i think they should be fired? no. but they obviously know that this type of behavior is offensive.....

"We apologize to the public officials for comments that were made on our XM show on May 9th. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused."

this is the problem with today's society! people are constantly pushing the envelope, seeing just how far they can go....and then when something offensive is said, they think that a simple apology can fix it all. and while i agree that some of the "Political Correctness" goes overboard at times, there has to be some level of "social sensitivity", if you will.

when will it be NOT okay to degrade women???? Chat Icon it's sad really.

I guess we disagree here because I think they should be accountable for the types of guests they have on the show and what they say. If they are concerned about a guest, they should have the show on a delay so they can bleep stuff out. I think it's time people are held accountable for the garbage they spew.

I have to disagree with this also. What happened to Freedom of Speech? It's a constitutional right, and you have the right to not listen.

"Freedom of Speech" doesn't mean you can say anything you want whenever and wherever you want. You can't shout 'Fire' in a crowded theater, you can't swear on network TV (FCC regulations). In addition, I never said that O & A didn't have the right to laugh about rape. I said I didn't think it was funny, and they should be held accountable. That doesn't mean I think they should be fired. It means I think people should decide that their program is garbage, and stop listening to it. Then the free markets will shut down their show because they will lose advertisers.

Just as they have the 'right' to horrible broadcasting, I have the 'right' not to listen and boycott their advertisers if I so choose.

Much of their humor is offensive - the people who are listening to it expect that. As a society we do not need someone to come in and say "that is offensive so no one can expose you to it."

They were obviously forced to apologize. . .but don't worry - as we learned from Imus and this latest "witch hunt" for DJs - apologies mean NOTHING in our world today.

This is getting a little ridiculous. . . who says we can't be offended? WHO CARES! If they have to be so careful in comedy not to offend a single person they would be doing knock-knock jokes all day. . . Chat Icon

I didn't hear about this, but I don't think it's that big a deal.

But I also don't think Imus should have been fired over his comments either. Yes, he was wrong, but that's part of the whole "shock jock" thing isn't it?

I personally think the whole politically correct thing is way out of control. If you don't care for what someone on tv or the radio is saying, change the channel. When I have my kids in the car, I never tune our XM to O&A, it's just common sense.

I agree with everything Cathy said.

I really do think it's getting out of hand. O&A shouldn't have been fired back in the St. Pat's thing, either IMHO.

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again

This is my take on the it all.

I don't listen to Howard Stern, O&A, Imus or pretty much anyone on the radio (except NPR). Sometimes I found Stern stupid, sometimes I find him boring. So you know what I do, I don't listen! I don't find what they do to be "art" which needs to be preserved, but I do not believe in censorship.

The "controversies" just end up helping the DJ's people are so outraged about. Do you think Howard Stern would be as famous as he is if it wasn't for all the publicity surround his FCC regulations and the like. I don't.

I never knew much about Don Imus until this thing. I think what he said was wrong, but I think half of what comes out of Howard Stern's mouth is wrong too. But they shouldn't be fired for it.

But the reality of the matter is, these radio stations are heavily dependent on corporate sponsership. Many of these corporations want to have a nice, clean image- so they don't want to sponser shows that are pissing people off (if they don't listen).

What upsets me the most is along the line of what Mrs. Erod said. That they can joke about "holding a woman down" and the stupid DJ's don't have enough sense to say, "you know man- that's just not right". No, they laugh along with it. Dumb azzes.

But I also don't think they should be fired for it. LIke the whole thing about broadcasting people having sex in a church. Stupid dumb azz. But they shouldn't be fired for it.

There is only one item of censorship I am a big fan of- the OFF botton.

Oh, please.
The bunched up panties are ruling the world.
I'm moving to Europe.

I don't think "According to Jim" is a funny TV show. Should it be cancelled?
No- I just don't watch it.

Offensive is a type of humor. Yes, it's a harsh one, but just as you have no control over random offensive people in you life, thusly there should be no firing of people for sarcasm on the air- ESPECIALLY on satellite radio! That's the POINT! It's why I pay for HBO!

This censorship movement is disgusting.
I'm going to go listen to my BodyCount and 2 Live Crew albums now.

You took the words right out of my mouth! How anyone can find anything even remotely amusing about an act as violent as rape is beyond me. I do not believe they should be fired however I do hope that some day, society as a whole puts an end to "joking" about violence against women and anything that serves no purpose other than to degrade and dehumanize.

The advertisers are very well informed of the demographics of the shows/listeners, as well as the nature of the content. They KNOW what they are getting into before signing any contracts for advertising or sponsorship of programming.

What happens is they see it as an acceptable risk, that is until it makes the 6pm news. Then they (the advertisers) act all surprised & outraged because they are afraid that what was once an acceptable risk is now overly mainstream and doing more damage than good. Plus putting their name on the 6pm news along with the rest of the hoopla gives them additional "free" publicity. It is such a game that it is sickening.

I also do not think they should get fired. However, if they were to get fired there is no "freedon of speech" issue here. Freedom of speech only applies to the government -meaning the government cannot censor you but a private company can. Second, radio, like tv, is a scarce medium, not everyone has access to it (you or I cannot go on the radio and say what we want - only a select few are allowed) so the rules are a little different.

That being said the radio station can choose to fire them if they do not want that type of broadcasting. Personally I think their broadcast re rape is more disgusting than Imus's comment.

XM radio...being a paid service is not under the same rules and regulations as terestrial radio...therefore they should not be held to the same rules as those on "free" radio.

I find that comment EXTREMELY offensive and not even remotely funny. Yet I am not about to start (or join) a crusade to have them thrown off the air - even if THEY had been the ones who said it. I don't care for O&A, and so, I do not listen to them. Simple as that. That's all I have to say.
