O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
On the heels of the Imus thing, this popped up this morning - not sure if you guys heard.
Not sure what's gonna happen here. They may be yanked off of FREE-FM and just air on XM.
Thoughts? -------------------------------------
O&A Show Testing the Limits Again NEW YORK -- Offensive comments on the Opie & Anthony Show on XM Radio may test the limits of free speech on satellite radio.
A homeless man, who was a guest on the show, said he would like to rape Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.
During the show that aired Thursday, O&A joked about "the horror" on Rice's face.
So did Opie & Anthony, who were fired from WNEW in 2002 for the alleged sex incident at St. Patrick's Cathedral, find another way to cross the line?
XM officials were quick to deplore the comments.
CBS executives said there are no plans to remove the show from the FREE-FM airwaves.
1010 WINS reporter John Montone said O&A apologized for the remarks Thursday night.

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
I didn't hear about this, but I don't think it's that big a deal.
But I also don't think Imus should have been fired over his comments either. Yes, he was wrong, but that's part of the whole "shock jock" thing isn't it?
I personally think the whole politically correct thing is way out of control. If you don't care for what someone on tv or the radio is saying, change the channel. When I have my kids in the car, I never tune our XM to O&A, it's just common sense.

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
The whole thing is BS in my opinion...Imus shouldn't have been fired, nor should Elvis and JB on Free-FM...What ever happened to freedom of speech? These DJ's are comedians for heaven's sake...I mean C'mon.
And why is it that D.L. Hughley was allowed to say "nappy headed ugly *******" on the Tonight Show last week.
I don't even know how you would counteract these actions...I mean how do you stop radio stations from firing comic DJ's?

If they get fired, it should be because they are not funny. What is funny about rape?

i mean, i think they're a couple of jagoffs anyway, and if they get canned, i'll find it amusing - but admittedly, they didn't do anything wrong here.

"Jokes" about rape are not funny. Period. Even if O&A didn't say the words themselves, they should have told that guest that his remarks were unacceptable.

considering that those 2 idiots condoned and encouraged sex in St. Pat's Cathedral, i'm not surprised they didn't say anything to the guest

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
I find that comment EXTREMELY offensive and not even remotely funny. Yet I am not about to start (or join) a crusade to have them thrown off the air - even if THEY had been the ones who said it. I don't care for O&A, and so, I do not listen to them. Simple as that. That's all I have to say.

When I heard those comments I definitely cringed - I knew it was going to get them into trouble!
I hope they stay on the air though - I am a huge fan even though I don't always agree with their material. . . but if they do go off I am going to cancel my XM I really don't listen to anything else.

Read the article more carefully, it says that O&A joked about the horror on Condoleeza Rice's face.
I agree nothing's funny about rape, but I don't think much of what those jerks say is funny anyway. Should they be thrown off the air? Probably not... but I sure won't be tuning into them ever. (I also didn't think Imus should have been fired)

If they get fired, it should be because they are not funny. What is funny about rape? Um they did not say it, the homeless guy did. Why should they be held responsible for what a guest said? They won't go after the homeless guy though b/c there is nothing to gain from it. And regardless of what they said to follow up, it is the nature of their show.
Its all politics & corporate BS.
How do we counteract the firings? By NOT listening to the stations who cave & fire the DJs, and also to boycott the advertisers who pressure the stations to fire their DJs. It sickens me that the creative integrity (whether you agree with it or not) is disrupted by the corporations who buy the advertising. Sorry, but you buy into a spot b/c of how many thousands of listeners per minute you can reach, NOT because you share the views of the hosts. That is how the advertising is supposed to work.....

The article says that O&A were making comments about it... Does it not? It didn't all come from the homeless guy according to the article. (Then again, I didn't hear it because I think they're idiots, so what do I know? )

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
I also wanted to mention that several years ago, Stern had a guest that dropped the "n" bomb. A day later the FCC fined him claiming that they received a multitude of complaints about his hate speech. HE never used the word during that broadcast, and people were so hot to see him off the air that they made these complaints without even paying attention to the facts. He was fined, but his station fought it, as it was unfounded. THIS is how the station should be...they need to stand behind their talent. They all knew what their DJs were about when they were hired, and personally I think it is ridiculous that they act surprised and shocked when their "shock jocks" make an off-color comment.

They made a comment about what the homeless man said. They did not encourage the act however. (unlike the St Pat's cathedral incident a few years back.)

I guess we disagree here because I think they should be accountable for the types of guests they have on the show and what they say. If they are concerned about a guest, they should have the show on a delay so they can bleep stuff out. I think it's time people are held accountable for the garbage they spew.

We definitely disagree here, because I think censorship is the worst thing that you can do to someone. To loom over them with the threat of a dump button is so stifling and so degrading. It is like having your dad sit over you & tell you how to do your job. Also, where does it end? They bring on guests that will create conversation whether through a controversial conversation or a symmetrical one. That is what they do, as do many other DJs. So should Larry King be held responsible when one of his guests uses his show & air time to lie about an ex-husband, or to lie about sleeping around? Are those topics not offensive to some as well?
Sorry but they did not use the word rape in the skit, and again the media is sensationalising & distorting the facts to create a means to their ends....
As far as their show being "garbage" if you don't like it, don't listen....to each their own

I have to disagree with this also. What happened to Freedom of Speech? It's a constitutional right, and you have the right to not listen. I find them very funny and entertaining most of the time. That doesn't mean I like everything they say, but the good comes with the bad. You don't think they are funny so you opt not to listen to them and you wouldn't have known about this situation if it weren't for the post here. They should not get fired for doing their job. They were hired on the basis of their prior history and listening audience. If noone from the audience is complaining they should not lose their job.

Re: O&A Show Testing the Limits Again
I don't really know where to draw the line or what to say is right and wrong... who should be fired and who should not be fired b/c it all falls under freedom of speech and the second we start limiting that is the second we start living in a society like Singapore. I mean, free speech is exactly that-- free and open. even though I agree it's wrong and offensive but it's a slippery slope to start telling people what they can and cannot say.
