According to my Italian mother....
gravy = Sauce made with meat
sauce (marinara) = no meat

It is sauce in my family - or "salsa" if you want to get technical...
gravy to my Italian born family is "sugo" and it only goes on meats

Sauce to me is marinara sauce, Gravy to me is brown gravy.

Sauce.
Sauce is red sauce for pasta.
Gravy is brown for meats and such.
My best friend is italian though and calls both gravy.

gravy is for turkey, chicken etc.
but both dh and my family call it sauce
