Re: Cookware
We have a T-Fal set that we got about 3 years ago. The inside is chipping- I think we are going to need new cookware soon!

We checked Consumers Report and settled for Kirkland Signature™ 13-piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set with a Copper-Bonded Five-Ply Base
LINK
what a great price! Do you like this set?
I like the set, its a bit heavy. You would still need some non-stick cookware. In terms of cleaning, it cleans well. At times foods do stick, but nothing so unmanageable to clean.
See, I am trying to avoid buying 2 different sets of stuff... I like the idea of stainless steel but I also love non stick cookware, decisions, decisions...

Re: Cookware
Different foods need different types of cookware. I think most people here would agree with that. Sometimes you need a non-stick pan. Sometimes you need stainless steel to cook faster. It just all depends.

Re: Cookware
I have a non-stick set that's pretty battered and am also looking for a replacement. I was going to get another non-stick set but then saw this article in Monday's Newsday.
------------------------------------------
Teflon chemicals in babies' cord blood THE WASHINGTON POST
May 1, 2007
A study of 300 Maryland newborn babies has shown that virtually all were exposed in the womb to two ubiquitous chemicals used to make protective coatings, nonstick products and insecticides. Past studies have tied the compounds to tumors and developmental toxicity in lab animals.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore found perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) in the infants' umbilical-cord blood. They published the results April 20 in the online edition of Environmental Science & Technology.
The newborns studied were born in Baltimore between 2004 and 2005.
Co-author Lynn Goldman said researchers are concerned that they are learning how prevalent the compounds are just as they are getting a sense of their toxicity. The chemicals are used to make Teflon and also a stain repellent for carpets.
"By the time we're becoming aware of the potential effect on public health, nearly everyone's exposed," Goldman said in an interview. "Once they're in the environment, we can't take them out of the environment."
Eight U.S. companies, including DuPont Co., agreed last year to virtually eliminate PFOA from consumer products by 2015. Goldman said the scientists are still trying to determine how the two compounds, which come from different sources, got in the babies' blood.
"What we don't know about these products is how they're getting into people's bodies," she said. Copyright 2007 Newsday Inc.

Re: Cookware
So are we saying that all nonstick cookware is bad?

Re: Cookware
I don't know honestly. It seems like they are just discovering that the chemicals used to make the non-stick coating are getting into our systems but scientists aren't saying if that is harmful.
I know that cast-iron cookware gives off iron which in small amounts is beneficial.
I just think its so odd that the chemicals have gotten into the cord blood.

I have the Calphalon Tri-Ply 13 piece set and I love it. It's stainless but nothing sticks to it and in the RARE instance (typically if I burn something! ) I just soak the pot with a small amount of soapy hot water for about an hour and it cleans up instantly.

I think this is the one we have. I purposely chose stainless steel over non-stick because I prefer to use metal utensils. And when that non-stick stuff starts to crack and lift...well that just can't be healthy.
