Georgia schools are voluntarily closing on Mon and Tues to conserve fuel due to Rita.

Tax dollars hard at work.....

I'd be quite happy if the NYC schools did that. Won't happen, but that's ok.

that doesn't make sense since all those kids will be home using energy and they are presuming everyone will be staying home and not out doing something.

UGH!!! The Atlanta Braves are now offering kids tickets for $1 on Mon & Tues since the governor says they don't have to go to school!!!!!

Actually, winter recess in NY schools goes back to the fuel shortage in the 1970's (I know before mnay of you were born but I vaguely) remember it.

The price of oil is an input cost in the production of almost EVERY good and service we buy in this country... nail salon electricity, pizza delivery, any item or service that uses electricity or gets delivered to you.... ummmm, sorry but the extra increae will be passed onto the consumers. Why?, because we have no alternative fuel source despite out country having 30 years to develop one. As long as we are dependent upon oil (especially those that love their SUV's) the price of EVERYTHING will go up.

I think we gotta do what we gotta do. Our local ofices now have a 40 hour workweek split into a 4 day work week and our local banks are open till late on friday instead of saturday (since most saturday transactions are friday paychecks.. so now people can do it on the way home rather then make another trip). Also our supermarkets have dimmed their lights inside to conserve fuel there are tons of things that can be done to help.

The past 10 days were the only days I haven't had to wait and sit for 2 hours for any type of gasy. Our gas comes up from the Gulf so once a storm heads into the Gulf the ship doesn't come and we used to get two ships but one dock was destroyed during Ivan and now since alot of our gas is going to the relief effort my area needs to do anything we can do to conserve gas and allow everyone to share.

I fear this storm nailing LA, there are so many refineries right in that area! We need to do whatever we can do.

I don't think taking kids out of school is ideal.. but will they have a longer day atleast?

Yup, that week for mid winter recess was supposed to be historically the coldest week so they figured if they didn't need to run the heat the schools would save money. I learned about that when I realized my inlaws in Philly never got off that week.. I always thought everyone did.

My sister lives in Georgia, her kids missed 3 days of school after Katrina because the buses couldnt get gas.
