Re: who do i need to go see??
I would start with your Gyn & then go from there if they recommend a RE.

Re: who do i need to go see??
Have you been actively TTC? If you are under 30 you should TTC for a year and if you are over 30 you should TTC for six months. they typically will not do any infertility testing until you have been trying for those time periods.

Re: who do i need to go see??
Most gyno's won't test you for fertility issues, or recommend an RE, if you've only been trying a couple of months (I'm not sure what you mean by planning).
If you're over 35, they say to try for 6 months, under 35 - a year.

It's actually 35, not 30.

oh..that blows. we've been trying the last 2 months and i'm 30.
i guess i'm just going out of my mind. i'm using the Ovulation Test and keep thinking/looking at the calendar every minute of the day. i can't sleep and have headaches. can you say "obsessed"?

I am 31, we tried the past two months. My Dr. said that it could easily take up to a year for us to conceive even if there are no problems. He said if i wanted him to, he would start running tests after six months, but not before then.

That's great that your MD will go that route in 6 months. My point was that the general rule of thumb (most doctors) tell you to give it a year if your under 35, 6 months for 35 and older.

that's right - the official medical "definition" of "infertility" requires that you be trying for 1 year if under 35 and 6 months if over 35. so some docs won't start testing until after these points, whereas others will start before that depending on the situation.

See I dont know if it's so great that he told me that. I wish he had told me what you alll are saying because I think that some harm might come starting infertility tests when there is not really a problem. Not sure if this is coming out right but hopefully it makes sense.

2 months of trying is nothing, I wouldn't be testing for infertility problems just yet.

Well, it's good that he or she is willing to start testing - if you want it. If I were you, I would see how the next few months go. If you have no luck, then maybe, if you're ready, you can start some non-invasive tests (like a sperm analysis for your DH or bloodwork).

Re: who do i need to go see??
Anxiety and lack of patience can get the best of us. Ill be the first to admit it. But based on the following information, I wouldn't be too quick to run to an RE before it is necessary.
"For a woman aged 20-25, the chances of conceiving are around 25 per cent for each cycle (that is a one in four chance)
For a woman aged 30-35, the chances are 15 per cent, and thereafter the likelihood of becoming pregnant continues to decline with increasing age It will take a couple in their early twenties an average of five cycles to conceive
Women in their early thirties will get pregnant, on average, after nine cycles
One in ten couples will take more than a year to succeed in conceiving"
I am 36 and my doctor told me that my chances were not 15% but actually 10% in each cycle. Over 40 is closer to 5%
At the 6 month mark - to the day, we went back to the doctor to see what to do next. He ordered an SA for DH (which he passed with flying colors) and an internal sonogram as well as blood work for me. All seemed just fine.
At the 7 month mark, DH and I started doing inseminations in my doctor's office because we all really felt it was a timing issue. Any other procedure would not have been, as I call it, medically prudent based on all that we shared with the doctors and testing thus far. After 2 months of failed inseminations, I wanted and pushed to get an HSG done just to rule out a tube issue yet STILL scheduled my third round of inseminations (starting tomorrow and again on Thursday).
I came to learn that my cervical opening was too small and thus would not allow the radiologist to perform the HSG. I now need to have my cervix dilated not only to test my tubes, but to perform any further procedures (AIH or IUI).
In the midst of all this, I made appointments with two REs to cover myself in terms of timing. If by some miracle of G-d, they can dilate me and I can have successful inseminations this week, then I may cancel. In the mean time, I am ready to take the next step. BUT this was after waiting the right amount of time.
Do what you need to do to feel settled. Perhaps there were other reasons (a family history or personal history) why your doctor recommended you go earlier.
