Idiot's Guide to TTC (or NOT)
I feel so dumb for even asking, but I really need your help trying to figure out the TTC calendar (or NOT)!
DH and I are NOT looking to get preggo right now. DD is 4 months old and we want to wait. What are the "SAFE" days that I won't concieve?
I know that starting from Day 1 of your period - days 15-18 are most fertile - right?
If anyone can explain this to me in idiot's terms (b/c I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff ) I would be very to you!
TIA!

Umm, nope, wrong. Each woman's cycle is different and as such her fertile days are different. Some are fertile days 10-13, others days 18-22, and yes there are some that are fertile days 15-18. If you don't know enough about your cycle to know when you O, I would highly recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It will explain everything in terms you can understand.

Not only does it vary person to person, you can have irregular months as well. There are many wonderful birth control methods out there that are far more effective than a calendar.

You need to learn to temp if this is going to be reliable for you. Or use another method like condoms. I would recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility as she explains this in detail. Or at least look up natural family planning online.

Re: Idiot's Guide to TTC (or NOT)
I went to a Catholic university so had to take several religion classes. In one, we learned about "Natural Family Planning". Basically, it was the 10-10-10 rule. They said that if you have a 30 day cycle, the 10 days in the middle are the most risky. The first 10 and the last 10 are considered "safe". It does work, too because DH and I followed this all along until we decided to conceive. Which we did on the first try.
ETA: it now that we are trying for our second that we are having trouble.
ETA: I guess if you have a shorter or longer cycle, you change the number of days accordingly. It's all just an estimate and is supposed to give you a buffer in case of early or late ovulation one month.

I agree. I have always had wildly irregular periods. My drs. have all been amazed that I have gotten pregnant at all [this is my 2nd]. I noted to them that for about 2-3 months before I got pregnant the first time, I had oddly "perfect 28 day" cycles and then the month before I got pregnant with this baby I did the same. But normally I have 30+ [sometimes 60] day cycles. One month for kicks, I tested each week with OPKs...I never ovulated according to the sticks. I am opposed to hormones, so we use Encare. Basically just spermicide that you insert vaginally...the only side effect is this nice warming sensation...

Re: Idiot's Guide to TTC (or NOT)
You shouldn't feel dumb...many of us did not learn enough in school and many of us had parents who didn't talk about the birds and the bees. Like others on here, I found Taking Charge of Your Fertility to be very helpful. It involves using a fertility thermometer which was located near the pregnancy tests (not with the regular thermometers) in my drugstore.

I was told your most fertile days are 11-14 after your period - I got PG by accident, so I may not be the right person to answer this question!!!
