Re: Symptoms

You are not considered pregnant until implantation.

This is when your body starts producing HCG which is what gives us pregnancy symptoms.

That usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation.

Good luck!

You can also start to feel some symptoms in the 2ww from the heightened progesterone if the egg has been fertlized (but before implantation).

this is what actually confuses me. If the egg has not implanted, how does your body know that the egg was fertilized? Wouldnt the heightened progesterone be the same as it is with any other cycle, just your body way of preparing just in case there is a fertilized egg?

This whole thing is so confusing!

I read that your body begins prodcuing more progesterone when the egg is fertilized....I could be wrong though, but I think it makes sense.

Re: Symptoms

Okay - this is what i found on the subject (I take everything i read on the internet with a grain of salt though):

Q. Is it possible I could have symptoms of pregnancy as early as four days?
-Anonymous, Texas

A. Possible yes, but highly unlikely. Pregnancy signs and symptoms usually start showing up about 14 days after conception, when the egg implants itself in the uterine wall. Before implantation, the egg is free floating and would not yet affect your body. Upon implantation, your HCG levels will begin to rise. These are the hormones that create the "symptoms of pregnancy."

It is possible that you may have symptoms before implantation. Your mind may convince you of that. (See the other "hysterical pregnancy" question for more details.)

Q. Is it possible to want to have a baby so badly that your body shows symptoms? I am not late for my period yet, but "baby" is all I can think about. My breasts have been leaking, I am very tired and I have been urinating a lot. I have taken a home test (knowing it is too early), and it was negative. I still have three more days until my period.
-Anonymous, Nevada

A. “Hysterical pregnancies,” as they're called, are more common than you might think. I believe that every woman trying to conceive experiences this phenomenon to some degree. Some women, like myself, can feel nausea, faintness, weird cravings and tender breasts. Some women can develop even more symptoms, combined with a missed period, and not actually be pregnant. The mind has an incredible amount of control over the body. For instance, it's been proven that a positive attitude can greatly help people battle serious illnesses, such as cancer.

Back to the subject of whether or not you are pregnant. I guess you will just have to wait and see. The first day after your missed period is the soonest you can use a home pregnancy test. Of course, wishing for pregnancy couldn't hurt your chances!

HTH!

Also you should note she says that implantation occurs at the 14 day mark, but i have read that it occurs anywhere from 6-12 days, so who knows if she actually knows what she's talking about!

Re: Symptoms

I think there are so many different things out there!!

I was just reading an article that says after ovulation, the egg disintegrates after 2 - 3 days and progesterone drops. So, if that is the case, a fertilized egg last longer than 2 - 3 days in the system (even if it doesnt implant, can last up to like 12 days), so you would have elevated progesterone in your system for a longer period of time...which can cause people to have more intense AF symptoms that last longer....

Lesson learned - there are too many things out there on the Internet!!

In due time. No pun intended.

Re: Symptoms

I do not know exactly when progesterone levels begin to rise but you are not likely to feel a difference very early. If there is one thing I regret, it is looking for symptoms and making myself crazy during the 2ww. I am now a strong proponent of taking the 2WW as a time to know that you have done all you can and you should just live healthy and enjoy your relationship. Worry will not change the result but it is so important to be mentally ready for whatever happens at the end of the 2WW.

i think the bottom line is, for as much as we know about the human reproductive cycle, there is SO much that we don't know - including the very subtle chemical signaling that takes place upon fertilization. somehow, once fertilization takes place the corpus luteum knows to stick around and to keep on producing increasing levels of progesterone to prep the uterus and maintain the pregnancy. if there is no fertilization, then the corpus luteum slowly disintegrates, progesterone levels decrease, and menstruation occurs.

if it sounds like there are pieces missing from the explanations out there in textbooks, etc, that's because there are! we don't know the half of it, really.

progesterone, for all the good that it does, can really produce some evil symptoms, and i don't doubt that some women are sensitive to it and can experience heightened PMS-like symptoms in very early pregnancy, as progesterone levels rise instead of fall.

about the "hysterical pregnancy" concept... the term "hysterical" is bothersome because it has been used in the past in a somewhat derogatory way towards women. freud, for example, loves to call women "neurotic" and "hysterical", and in my opinion implies that we are the weaker sex. as a psychiatrist, this drives me nuts Chat Icon . it isn't unheard of for a woman to have a "pregnancy" that originates in her psyche, with symptoms and even a big belly... but it's EXTREMELY rare. thinking that you have pregnancy symptoms in the 2ww doesn't even come close, and is completely understandable when you want something so badly!!!
