Is doctor visit necessary
How many of you went to the doctor before beginning to TTC? Do you think it is necessary? My annual is usually in June.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
DH and I went. I had quite a few questions to ask beforehand that nobody but he could answer for me in regard to other medical issues. If you arent already on a prenatal, he may suggest one for you. Not every doctor does the same thing for every patient. It may be an inconvenience to go, but it certainly wouldnt be a waste of time.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
for me not useful at all. Didn't help, I asked questions like "how do I know if everything is OK" "how do I know if I ovulate" and she basically didn't help at all.
Was told to take folic acid, 400mg, and try for a year before going back to her for help.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
i was due for my yearly pap and made that my "prenatal visit". but i have to say, it was anticlimactic. i expected all of this information and instead she just told me to use OPKs and said "see you in a few months!" she didn't even start me on prenatals - she said any over the counter brand was ok.
the one good thing about it was that i got the majority of the initial prenatal bloodwork out of the way.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I went to my doctor for my annual and told her I was planning on TTC in a few months. She did all the initial bloodwork and internal/pap to rule out STDs, and whatnot (thankfully as by the time my first prenatal visit, the LAST thing I wanted was a speculum in me).
She also told me to start taking OTC prenatals with a folic acid/DHA supplement and sent me on my way....

I went but I dont think its absolutely necessary if you go annually anyway. you may just want to call and get a perscription for prenatals though....

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I spoke to my GYN about TTC during my annual. He didn't do any bloodwork above what he does at every annual exam. He told me how long to be off BCP before TTC, and to take folic acid for at least 3 months before TTC (and to continue taking it).

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I just wanted to add that way before my TTC visit - in fact just a month or two before DH and I got married (about a year ago) I had blood work done to rule myself out as a carrier for many genetic disorders associated with my cultural background (Ashkenazi - Eastern European - Jewish descent). All of the tests came back negative, thank G-d.
There are other cultural backgrounds, besides mine that are also predisposed to certain disorders. If you fall into one of those groups, you may wish to have blood work done before TTC. If not, you may just wish to call your doctor, ask for a prenatal, BD and have fun!

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I spoke to my doctor at my annual visit when we were starting to think about TTC. For me, it was a great idea because my doctor's enthusiasm and excitement let me know that he was the right doctor to stay with! He gave me some tips and wished me luck.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I went to my Dr. today for my annual visit and I told him that we were going to start ttc in the spring. He prescribed me some pre-natals and told me to start taking them one month before ttc and he also told me to BD on day 12, 14 and 16.

Re: Is doctor visit necessary
I only went to a doctor because I was very sick and for nearly 2 years they were trying to figure out what was wrong. Luckily, they found out (finally) and I was given the green light to TTC. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gone.
