D&C vs Misoprostol? RP from Pregnancy board

I asked this on the Pregnancy board and got some good advice there but thought you girls may be able to help me as well as I am so torn and emotional right now.

I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum last week (I would have been 8 1/2 weeks).Chat Icon This morning the doctor recommended we do a D&C tomorrow after looking at my sonogram pics. I wanted to try and stay away from a D&C as I know there can be complications. He prescribed me medication I can take tonight so I can miscarry naturally tomorrow (and pain meds to get me through it). He said if I am still bleeding bad on Saturday morning I may need to still go in and have the D&C done then. In the car ride to work after the appt I started wondering if maybe I should just do the D&C tomorrow and not worry about the chance of complications. By the way, DH is away this week on business and being I am still somewhat new to the area, I do not have too many friends here. The ones I have work.

Sorry this is long but I was hoping maybe some of you had some advice as to what I can do? I am so confused and torn. Thank you.

As far as the D & C , I have never had one. I have been given methotrexate. Is this an option for you? Are you bleeding? How many weeks were you? It was painless really.

The doctor didn't mention the methotrexate. It wasn't until I pushed back on the D&C that he mentioned medication at all.

The spotting was light for about 2 weeks and I would have a twinge of pain every now and then. It was more on the brown side. On Monday night it turned red (sorry if TMI) and got a little heavier. By the time I woke up on Tuesday morning I had horrible cramps (like AF but a little worse) and some twinges of pain. I still have the cramping (taking the prescription pain killer for it) and the bleeding goes from light to heavy through out the day. This is why I was so surpised to hear him say that he wanted this taken care of qucikly this morning.

I was 7 weeks when the spotting began and am now a little over 9 weeks.

First, a D & C should be the last resort. My Dr would always prefer a chemical solution rather than surgery whihc is what a D&C is. First they should check your betas 2 days apart they should be falling at roughly the same rate as rising halving every 48-72 hrs or at least dropping substantially. The body is an amazing thing and may eb able to take care of this on its own. 2nd, after these tests he should give you the metho and again check your levels. If that does not work then you should think about D & C. If your Dr is not willing to do this then you should find a new doc. IF you are in Suffolk I can recommend a great gyn. GL and let me know if you need any help. I have had more than one m/c and never needed a D&C

My doctor was very willing to let me go the way I wanted to. He recommended the D&C and when I said I was not too into that he prescribed me Misoprostol to take tonight to make it happen. He told me to take tomorrow off from work and it should be over by Friday. I am just curious why he would go for the D&C and only mention the meds once I said I wanted to stay away from the invasive procedure. He said if I am still bleeding heavy on Saturday morning I will need to come in for the D&C to ensure it is all expelled. So now I am confused as to what to do. Do I go through all this tomorrow to only have to get the D&C anyway maybe? I am not sure of any complications from the medication either (i.e for when I get pg again). I put a call in to him to ask these last questions and discuss my options once more before I take the meds tonight. I am also scared to take them being that DH is away and I am home alone tonight.

Thank you for your help. I do like my doctor. I am not in NY anyway to go to yours. I live in NC.

Re: D&C vs Misoprostol? RP from Pregnancy board

Oh can't help you in NC. Misoprostal is something that brings on uterine contractions. It will be like a mini labor and i would not want to do that alone! Like i said he needs to check your hcg to make sure your levels are not going down on their own...

Methotrexate is a chemotherapy drug that attacks cells that are foreign(whihc is what it is if you are having a m/c) You will feel some cramping but nothing horrible. Obviously he doesn't feel you have an eptopic because he wanted to do a D&C so I don't see the harm in waiting.

I have a blighted ovum. My numbers were increasing when he checked my Hcg levels b/c the body reacts like it is pregnant. I have a sac but no yolk. Do you know anyone who has used Misoprostal for this purpose? I got pain meds as well to help me through it.

I don't know anyone who has used this and actually have read that it is an outdated protocol for m/c. Blighted ovum is just another word for m/c. Just like chemical pregnancy, etc. I woudl ask about the metho. I have taken it twice. No issues, you can try again your next cycle as it leaves your system in a few days.

Outdated? Really? I am waiting to hear back from the doctor to ask him some more questions before I take this med tonight. I am so confused.

Thank you so much for your help. You seem to be really knowledgeable.

I am sorry you have gone through thisChat Icon Here is wishing you luck for the futureChat Icon

I spoke with the doctor again. He told me he prefers this way as it seems as if my body is letting it happen naturally and this will just help it along. I asked him why doctors go straight for the D&C and why he recommended that over the meds and he said b/c it is more convienent for the patient as well as for the doctor. He said the meds were a safer way to go, it just takes longer and is more painful than a D&C. I am ok with that as I really do not want to go through an invasive procedure. He also told me if I wanted to wait until DH and I were home from our trip next week I could do that to so I don't have to go through it alone. Only thing is that this will be dragged out that much longer. I really do need closure at this point. Another week and a half of this would be torture. DH wants me to wait until he is home with me but I am still considering taking the meds tonight to move this process along.

Re: D&C vs Misoprostol? RP from Pregnancy board

Thanks for your help. I took the meds last night. My friend slept over since I did not have to be alone (how awesome a friend is that!) so I was a lot more comfortable about taking them. Well, nothing happened at all. I waited up almost all night anticipating something will happen and if anything, it slowed down what was already happening. No more cramping and now it is a light flow. I am so sad and confused. I have a call into the doctor to try to understand what may have happened.
