my OPK experiment - UPDATED with round 2
ok, so i usually get my positive OPK on day 14 of my cycle at night. however, last night i tried with an answer OPK and it was negative.
so, this morning i tried again with FMU, first with answer and then with clearblue easy and clearblue easy digital. and the results were...
drumroll, please...
answer: POSITIVE - very clearly so clearblue easy: NEGATIVE - the faintest line ever clearblue easy digital: NEGATIVE - no smiley face there
my conclusion is that answer is the more sensitive of the brands i tried. ideally, i would have tried again later on today, but i am at work and it's not exactly private (like, people would notice if i was walking around with a little pee cup ). i will probably try again with all three brands late tonight after i get home.
UPDATE: tried again at 8:30pm, 14 hours after my first try, and got:
answer: NEGATIVE clearblue digital: NEGATIVE (ran out of regular clearblue)
so, i think a general conclusion from these results is that all OPKs are NOT created equal! no need to spend the extra $ on digitals - they are not as sensitive as the cheapie answer kits!
everyone's surge lasts for a different period of time, and mine has lasted a couple days in the past. but this time it didn't last very long, and if i had used the clearblue tests alone i would have missed my surge entirely.

i'm new to all this, but would it mean that the days the Clearblue is positive is closer to your O date?

Re: my OPK experiment
I don't think so...I just think the Answer did a better job of detecting. Last month I used another brand and it never detected it at all even though my temps changed. I think the Answer is very reliable. JMO

i guess, technically, it does mean that. i will probably get a positive on the clearblue tonight, closer to my actual O time, because presumably my LH will be higher. where it gets tricky is - depending on how much the clearblue test lags behind, i (and all of you, potentially!) could be losing valuable BD time. or maybe my LH peak was actually this morning, and the answer was the only one sensitive enough to pick up my LH level. so some women using these other brands may never get a positive test if their LH levels aren't high enough.

Re: my OPK experiment
uh-oh that stinks!!! I only test 1x per day in the evening around 7-8. Sat was my first +. DH worked Friday nite so there was no bd'ing and I did not get a surge Friday nite anyway.
i could kick myself for not testing again yesterday

But try to remember that you surge anywhere from 12 to 36 hours BEFORE O. As long as you catch your surge (indicated by a +OPK) and BD you're fine, regardless of how many days you surge.....

Re: my OPK experiment - UPDATED with round 2
thanks Porruss. I did a test last nite with Accuclear - (that's all they had at store). there was a faint second line but it wasn't darker than test line. So, can I assume that I ovulated sometime Sunday on CD12?
Friday night negative
Sat. night (result same color as test line) = my surge
Sun. did not test
Mon. nite - 2 lines but the result was lighter than test line

so your surge was on saturday night - so you likely ovulated sometime on sunday, or monday morning at the latest.
about your question above... testing twice a day isn't so economical, and may not be necessary for some folks, but others may have to in order to capture their surge...

so, this morning i tried again with FMU, first with answer and then with clearblue easy and clearblue easy digital. and the results were...
I thought you weren't supposed to use FMU for an OPK b/c LH levels are high in the AM. At least, my opk's specifically say not to use FMU, as do all the websites I 've looked into from reading this board.

Re: my OPK experiment - UPDATED with round 2
i just started using the CBE monitor this month. i'm on day 4. i hope it works for me, i don't want to regret spending all that $$.
I actually thought the monitor would be easier because u use FMP. i drink too much water during the day to be able to hold it for 4 hours.

i believe that FMU is discouraged because LH typically, but not always, surges during daytime hours. i could be wrong, but i think that's the reason. someone correct me if i'm wrong?
ETA: okay, i found this on a fertility website; not sure how reliable, but for what it's worth: The LH surge can be detected in the urine with a commercially available urine test kit. Optimal test results are obtained around the noon hour. Most women will surge by 8 am. It takes about 4 hours for the surge to be detectable in the urine, so planning to use the ovulation predictor kit between 11am and 3pm will yield the most accurate result.

I think you are correct Alexlynn re the LH surge usually, but not always for everyone happens during the day hours.
