So frustrated!!!

I feel so stupid. I have been to BRU to work on my registry 4 times, and I am so confused!! How am I supposed to know how many I need of things like side snap shirts, onesies, pj's, etc. Not only that, how do I know the specifics like do the pj's have to have the fold over to cover the hands, and if so up to what age? This is just the tip of the iceberg. Every time I go there I leave in tears feeling like a total moron and wondering if I can't figure this out, how am I ever going to raise a child???

I know this stuff is so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I am lucky to be healthy with a beautiful baby on the way, and I understand that, but still I am sitting here crying trying to get a handle on all of this.

Has anyone else gone throught this? How did you deal? I have asked people I know for advice, and if one more person tells me it's a "personal preference" I'm going to kill them. How can these things be a personal preference if I have never done this before???????? Chat Icon

Sorry this is so long, I would appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone might have. I tried using the list BRU gives, but it confuseed me more...am I just stupid?? Chat Icon

Re: So frustrated!!!

I did a lot of surfing on the net. Check their website before going into the store & see what they have. Also, the people on the floor are very helpful....don't be afraid to ask questions.

OMG! I thought I was a complete hormonal freak. Everytime I think about registering I get overwhelmed. Especially b/c DH and I dont want to find out what we're having. We've had a hard time finding neutral items that we like. It has been so stressful. Everytime we go to BRU I end up leaving in tears. You are totally not alone!! Every time I ask someone on the floor they either re not sure or they give me the "personal preference" answer. They make it worse Chat Icon

If you want help I would be more than happy to go with you. I love doing this stuff. I had a lot of help registering with my son 2 1/2 years ago. I just helped my SIL. I am no expert but can try to help you out in any way I can.

Re: So frustrated!!!

Here is a tip- I wouldn't even worry about registering for clothing- especially if you have a lot of recent mom family or friends. I got a TON of clothes for all ages and feel like I have enough to get by for months. By the time I need to buy stuff for, I will have figured out what I like and don't like. Everyone gave me stuff they said they really used and liked.

Thanks - you are right! I figure I can always use any gift cards I get to buy the necessary clothing items like undershirts and socks and stuff!

I didn't register for any clothing, and I got so much clothing. I wouldn't stress yourself out. Don't register for it, see what you get, and then go get whatever you need.

totally agree!! Clothing isn't necessary - you will get a lot at the shower and once the baby is born! focus on the big items. For that I looked at all my friends' registries. that helped alot.

Re: So frustrated!!!

You are all right. I am stressing over something that is so insignificant. Whatever I don't get I can go buy myself. So, I will register for the big things and not worry about the rest. Thanks for all your advice!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. I found that most people who haven't had babies bought clothes for 0-3 months or 3-6 months. Most of the BTDTs gave me 6-9, 9-12. Many 0-3 don't get used.

My suggestion is to take someone that has a baby - and if you can find someeone with a 1-2 year old, you're better off.

The reason is because many of the things that you're told you need or have to have isn't true. BTDTs can give you perpective on a lot of items. A mom of a 1 year old has already used most of the items on her registry. A mom of a 3 month old isn't going to be able to tell you why one item is better than the other. Also a mom of a 5 year old may not be up on the newer items.

Baby Bargains was a tremendous help for me.

Re: So frustrated!!!

It took me about 3 weekends to register. I would then come home add stuff delete stuff from online.
Can I recommend to you the Baby Bargains book....I promise, this book is a BIG help! Also, I registered at the Commack store and it took us a 20 minute demonstration from an employee to help make our decision on a hight chair! She was GREAT! I found them to be extremely helpful! Now, Im waiting on furniture (another story) but Im hoping to get that situation cleared up soon!

Re: So frustrated!!!

I am always going back to mine and making changes- I had onesies and gowns, and I decided to take those things off. I also tried to take a "minimalist" approach because we just don't have a lot of space, and MIL has already gotten us a lot of things (crib sheets, mattress pads, swaddle blankets) and I got a Boppy from a friend, so I didn't register for those.

If you want to see my registry, let me know and I will FM you my last name.

Re: So frustrated!!!

I totally understand how you feel. It is very overwhelming, doing my wedding registry was much easier b/c it was things that DH and I KNEW we wanted and needed.

I used the registry checklists that BRU & BBB gave me, but I didnt put everything on and for things like bottles I didnt overdo it b/c every baby is different and the baby may like a different kind than what I got.

Just remember, you can always exchange something you realized you dont want or need for something you do.

Re: So frustrated!!!

I felt very overwhelmed at first too, and went through many of the same emotions that you are feeling. It is a lot to take in when you are registering, especially when this is your first child. I actually had a friend who has a young child go with me to register at BBB and she helped me a great deal. I also showed my registry list to a couple of my friends with kids and asked if there was anything that they felt I should add or delete from the list. I also emailed all of my friends with young kids and asked them to recommend things that came in useful with a baby and which things were a waste of money. They really helped me a lot. Think about it this way, how could you possibly know what would be a necessity if you've never had a child before? That's the way I started looking at it. I am sure once I have the baby there will be other things that I didn't register for that I need, and then I'll just go and purchase those items.

Even for basic things like diapers and formula, there's no way of knowing what diaper, formula, bottle, babywipe, etc. works best for your child until after the baby is born because each child has individual needs.

I agree......EVERYONE gives clothes and I find the guests like to pick out what they want clothing wise instead of being told what shirt, pj's, etc. to get
