How do you feel about antibiotics?
I know there is a lot of mixed feelings about them. I also heard about a study where they took kids with ear infections and did not give them antibiotics and the ear infections went away in about the same time.
So what do you think? I am asking because dd is on her 2nd day of almost 103 fever and she went to the ped today, who gave her an antibiotic and said we may want to give her a day to see if her fever breaks on its own before we give it to her, it is our choice. What would you do? She said her ears look like they are on the way to an infection (not sure what this means, dh took her and relayed the info.)
BTW- she just finished an antibiotic last week for an ear infection, but friday her ears were clear.

Re: How do you feel about antibiotics?
I HATE giving MEds, especially antibiotics unless it's definitive they are needed. I do not give or take them myself if it's a "just in case" or a preventative.
I so believe the overuse of anitibiotics has led to non treatable and harder strains of bacteria.
But that's just me

I hate antibiotics with a passion. We give Sodium Ascorbate (Vit C powder)when the kids are sick. It clears up anything in a day or two. The only time I give antibiotics is if they have an infection.

I completely agree with this. I would only use them if necessary and a definite infection. My ped feels very strongly about this as well.

I dont have a prob with giving antibiotics. Jacob was diagnosed with a sinus infection last week and the ped gave him amoxicillan for 10 days. If my baby is in pain or uncomfortable in any way, I will not hesitate to give him what he needs to feel better.

they took kids with ear infections and did not give them antibiotics and the ear infections went away in about the same time.
The reason for this is that 60% of ear infections are viral, rather than bacterial. Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections. So, if the ear infection is from a virus, it will get better in the same amount of time, regardless of whether an antibiotic is given or not.
I feel that you need to ask your pediatrician whether he thinks the child's ailment is viral or bacterial.
Most of the time with a viral infection, the child will run a low grade fever (less than 101). That is the body's response to the infection -- it is raising the temperature to try to kill the offending bug. Usually when a child has a bacterial infection, the temperature goes higher (above 101-102).
If your child had an ear infection a week ago and it is back again, it means that all of the bacterial was not killed last time. Her ears may have been clear on Friday because enough bacteria were killed to let the infection start subsiding, but not enough to keep it away. They may need to change the medicine they are treating with.
HTH.
Personally, I would never deny my child antibiotics if she had a true bacterial infection. If the doctor feels it is viral, we will just have to tough it out until she feels better because she is not getting an antibiotic for that.
p/s - overuse of antibiotics has definately led to the emergence of "superbugs" and the loss of efficacy of some antibiotics. In fact, physicians are supposed to explain that to patients now before prescribing antibiotics.

I agree with our board expert!
I will often ask the doctor if an antibiotic is necessary when it's an ear infection & his advice is to wait it out since they are often misdianosed.
Not a chance I'd be skipping doses if she had such high fevers. I'd rather be safe than sorry with an illness like that. Also I'm not a big fan of Tylenol unless they're extremely uncomfortable. My perception is the reason the body temperature is raised is so that your body can fight off the infection. I don't like lowering it unnaturally unless it means they're not eating, drinking or sleeping.

I would wait. It could be viral and antibiotics arent' helpful for that and overuse of anitbiotics only cause resistance among the population.

I feel the same way. If it will make her feel better faster, shes getting it!

Re: How do you feel about antibiotics?
I hate giving antibiotics and read that children given antibiotics before age one have a huge increase in the chances of having asthma. Unfortunately, DD has been taking anitbiotics every day since she was 2 weeks old and is now 6 months. She has hydronephrosis ( a kidney and ureter problem) and has to take antibiotic to prevent urinary tract and kidney infections. We have had several "second opinions" and all the doctors say the benefits outweigh the risks. Still, I hate giving it to her and hope she grows out of her problem soon - don't want her to have surgery either.
