Dh said I don't have to take this test but I don't take it I think I will be still worried about it.

Re: Questions

Did they tell you at the ultrascreen what your chances were for Downs?

What would you do with the information?

I am not having an amnio - because I wouldn't change anything anyway. Also my SIL was told her baby was 80% sure Downs and she was fine. So all that worrying for nothing.

Re: Questions

I had the 16 week blood test last week. At 13 weeks, I had the ultrascreen and blood test. Will get the combined results of all of this later this week.

For me, I would rather know than not know if there was a problem.

ETA...since these tests are non-invasive and unable to *cause* any problems.

I am pretty sure I would not get an amnio if it were "optional" for age, etc. since there is a slight risk associated with it. I would, however, have it if my preliminary results were troubling.

Re: Questions

with my son I didnt take either of them and worried alot less. with this baby I did the downs because my doctor was real nasty about it and it worried me more but I didnt do the spina bifida because i switched doctors inbetween. I think its your own personal feelings towards it. I would not get an abortion no matter what so I would rather not know until the baby is born.

Re: Questions

I've opted to do the blood tests. I know that they are not 100% ever, but if there's a chance that there is something wrong with my baby, I'd rather have time to prepare before he/she is born.

Re: Questions

We opted for the test and came back with elevated results for Down's Syndrome...my ultrascreen was 1 in 10,000...the AFP was 1 in 244...its been a stress but we are glad that we have the options open to test further if we decide to go that way....I am told by my doctor that false positive elevated levels are fairly common, as are false negative levels...

Re: Questions

definitely take the tests. why wouldn't you want to know how well your baby's doing? i'm a person who's more on the paranoid side, you could say. it put my mind at ease. realistically speaking, better to know early than late in the stage.

Re: Questions

I only had the ultrascreen-no afp as recommended my my high risk and reg doc.
Way too many false positives that can make bigger problems they said.,
I also think its higher false positives with
twins.

what test came back elevated for downs?
the 1-10,000 sounds good to me--so I am assuming it was not this test?

Re: Questions

I had the blood test and the sono.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. I wanted to know before he was born if anything was wrong with him. This way I could try and prepare for him. And read up more on what was wrong before giving birth.

ETA: The AFP I was told has a very low % of false positives.

Re: Questions

I had the first part of the test at 12w4d and I have to say that I highly recommend it...forget the medical reasoning behind it...you get to see your baby and the techs spend a lot of time with the images to get their measurements...so you get the see the baby for a longer time than usual. But in addition, for us, we want to know the risk (so far it's low) but we will not do the amnio unless absolutely necessary. I'll leave the rest in God's hands. We go for the second blood work part next week.
