Anyone belong to a country club?

Can you talk me into joining?

DH isnt a big golfer (has very little time, anyway) but he is hell-bent on joining a local country club. Thinks it would come in handy during summer with kids and the pool and we could go over and occasionally have dinner. Possibly make new friends. Problem is is that I really dont know too many membes my age and I have social anxiety. I can come off rude when I meet a person but I am really clawing from the inside out with anxiety.

With that said, other than sit by the pool with just my kid during the sunmer waiting for people insist being my friend what else is there to do?

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

LOL- you sound like me. Making new friends at a country club sounds like torture to me. But again- social anxiety.

The only people I know who belong to country clubs do so for the golf.
I know it's very expensive and you also have to pay a certain amount for food every month- use it or not.
So at the end of the month, my SIL and BIL would be taking everyone they know there to use up the food allowance.

I don't think I'd spend the money just to use the pool. I feel like you could join a pool club or community pool for a lot cheaper.

If he was going to golf a lot, then it might be worth it

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

Other than golf, pool, tennis there really isn't much to do during the day. On summer holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc) the clubs are fun, but other than that.... most of your time will be spent by the pool during the day. At night there are some fun things... IE: paint night, movie night, white party, etc. What club are you thinking about? Make sure it even has a pool. Some clubs don't even have one. :(
If you guys aren't into golf or don't have the time... join a pool club. It's cheaper and the members are younger.

We had a country club membership, and they only had golf, no pool. So I never went. If they had a pool I would have went all the time because we do not have a pool

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

My husband had joined one a few years ago. He did it 2 years in a row.

It didn't have a pool. It was in Sayville and has since closed to make more housing...

To be honest we never went to any functions that we were invited to (you had to always pay for them anyway).

For the amount of times he played golf and the cost of the membership... It wasn't worth it. (and trust me he plays a lot)

He almost was going to join Bellport but he likes to be able to go to different courses.

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

We got a boat last year and joined Long Island yacht club. We dock there and use the facility all the time.

They have a tiki bar , huge pool, small beach, playground, tennis courts, etc. they have themed nights all season. Volley ball night, etc.
they also have Sunday BBQs and night life parties in the indoor bar and catering room.

The whole season feels like we are on vacation. Was worth it for us.
There are people who just join the club without a boat as well.

Edited to add: this particular club is very Laid back. Cool people. No mandatory monthly spending either. I know a lot of places can be a little uptight and you have to spend $ every month no matter what.

Nah. I don’t like socializing with people for free, I’m certainly not about to pay for it.

Sorry OP. Find a friend with a pool and call it a day. Then you only have to socialize with one person.

DH and I do (because he's an avid golfer) and I hate it. It's one of the very few things we argue about.

I generally dislike the whole country club vibe. Being in a situation where you are supposed to chit chat and make small talk with people is my personal hell.

It is so much money and the only thing we (we = DH) use it for is golf. I didn't set foot there a single time last summer.

We also don't have kids so sitting by the pool with all the moms and their kids isn't something I want to do. There definitely seems to be a "keeping up with the Joneses" mindset and I always feel like the wives and moms are competing with each other. Again, my personal hell.

Sorry to be so negative (and FWIW, I live OOS so this isn't a LI club I'm talking about). Maybe it varies club to club, but personally, it's not my thing!

Have you/he thought about a beach club or cabana instead of a country club? It is someplace to go/something to do with the kids but usually less pressure to socialize and besides a wave to your neighbors you can keep to yourself if that is what you prefer.

You guys are cracking me up.

I swear I am the same way. I think I am the Inventor of RBF. And I truly don’t like feeling like I have to talk to anyone lol

I don’t even have kids and love sitting by the pool at our club. Headphones in = don’t talk to me.

I agree, some are pretentious. But I truly enjoy ours.

To the OP: Can you go for the day and try it out?

I was looking into joining this club, but wondered if it wasn't worth it due to the location. How big is the beach area? Do people actually sit there and go in the water? Is the pool overrun by kids?

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

We do and I really enjoyed it while my kids were babies and before we got our own pool fixed. Now I can kind of take it or leave it but money is tight right now and it's one expense I can do without. My husband golfs and plays platform tennis (paddle) and he loves that so for now we will stay members. They do have great parties for adults and kids (Although the kids have outgrown most of the parties before they turn 10. We belong to a very young, social club and we are very social people so for us it's a good fit. I can't imagine wasting that much money it I didn't like to socialize and my husband didn't want to golf. As some of the other posters have suggested, why not look into a pool club or even some of the yacht clubs have pool memberships. At the very least, if your husband doesn't golf, see if you can join a golf club that offers House & Pool memberships, that way at least you aren't paying for golf.

The one good thing is that as your kids get older you can bring them to the club and they find their friends and you can sit by yourself and just read a book!

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

I think a lot depends on what type of country club it is. There are a number of them near me on the north shore and totally not my thing. They are $$$$$ and are not the "vibe" that I'm into.

The beach area is small. I sit there a lot and read. People take the paddle boards & kayaks out at the beach as well.

The pool isn't overrun by kids. There are kids there obviously, but they stay towards the shallow end on the other side where the shaded chairs are (that's where most of the moms w small kids stay) There is a lifeguard there and when people want to do some laps, they tend to keep the kids out of a lane or 2 so adults can swim. I don't have kids and I enjoy the pool area.

I think it's worth it BECAUSE of the location. We are in the next town over. Every time we drive down the path to the club, it's like driving to a vacation but it only took us 5 minutes to get there. They just had an open house but if you call, you can take a tour and find out all about it. We really enjoy it there. my DH signed us back up in November as soon as we pulled our boat lol

Edited to add: there’s another open house Sunday April 29th .. from their FB Page :

Open House! Come meet the LIYC Sunday 4/29 from 11am - 3pm for information on Membership, Catering, Boating, our Youth Programs and more.

Re: Anyone belong to a country club?

We're going through this now.
My husband wants to join for the sports. I do not. There's a whole process to get into the club. Mix and mingles to meet members...having someone sponsor you....letters need to be written...
It's absurd. I hate the whole idea. I equate it to joining a sorority (no offense to anyone who was in one). I hate paying dues and 'proving myself' to go to a pool club. Absolutely ridiculous.

Plus, where we live, it's this whole "keeping up with the joneses" vibe. Makes me want to barf. I don't like people enough to go through that garbage. Chat Icon
